The Crystalling - Discussion

Nice world building, but a little repetitive to previous lessons. Starlight was the highlight of the episode.

Enjoyed watching it, but like you said, feels a bit like a rehash of previous plots. Don't really feel like it's "world building," either. Also, most of the ponies were rather one-note (or no-note), personality wise. How often are we gonna see Pinkie Pie being overly excited about a party or something? Or Twilight micromanaging? And the other Mane 6's personalities hardly registered at all (aside from maybe Applejack and Rainbow Dash's, like once or twice). There was really no time to devote to any of them to make them more interesting, but that which the time was devoted to wasn't all that interesting, either... Sunburst is slightly awkward. Shining Armor is goofy. The Princesses are very regal. What is Starlight Glimmer's personality even, though? It felt like characters' roles (who weren't Starlight or Sunburst) could've been almost interchangeable, except in predefined places.

Enjoyed having the show back: the art style, the expressions on the ponies' faces, the cuteness, etc. However, this one felt like something was missing. I wish I could love 'em all, but if I were trying to convince someone that FiM is more than just a show for little girls, I wouldn't point them to these two episodes to start out with (nah, I'd probably show them something like "Make New Friends but Keep Discord" from last season. That episode was awesome.)

On the plus side, there weren't any spontaneous musical numbers.

Cynicism is easy.

Well, they've now established the concept of alicorn birth, something neither Celestia or Luna were familiar with it opens a few new elements of research for Twilight.

reply

I disagree with you. A number of world elements were developed and established in this episode.

On the other hand, you are correct, the characters seemed rather 1 dimensional. It kind of reminded me of a 6 year old playing with my little pony characters. "Let's Party" shaking Pinky Pie figurine. "I'll design the dresses." Shaking Rarity. "I'll get there first." Shaking Rainbow Dash. "I made a list of what we need to do." Shaking the Twilight figurine.

Blah blah blah. A 6 year old would probably have written more interesting dialogue for this episode.

I thought it was a great premiere.

My Little Pony does The Dark Crystal. Hell, even choosing the purity Crystal looked like the choose the real Crystal shard scene, and the Purity Crystals LOOKED like the Crystal Shard.

Dude... it's an opinion and observation of the episode. Doesn't have anything to do with canon or fanon. In the episode they need a shard to "heal the crystal" which was the basis of The Dark Crystal.

Seriously, your obsession with attacking me for calling you out on your idiocy is scary.

Right... because Knowby attacking me on the SPN board and the MLP board is me stalking him.

Seriously man... you both are showing what pathetic trolls you are.

I'd say more than just nice world building, I'd say well done subtle world building. The Crystal Heart is empowered by the Crystal Ponies and vice versa. So the Crystal Heart was once an ordinary crystal that grew in power, and over time, it made the ponies become Crystal Ponies. All this without ever really spelling it out directly. The Princesses not being born Alicorns... This is the kind of world building I want, not "where can we explore next?" and, "what new character can we introduce next?" I still want my Mayor Mare episode, but I think that is a lost cause.

As to repetitive, I think you will find that there are only so many stories to tell and types of lesson to learn. Criticize the telling, not the retelling.

Yes, Starlight and Sunburst were the highlights of the episode, along with Shining Armor(yay for Shining Armor getting character development!) Starlight and Sunburst's issues of embarrassment at the way your life has unfolded and the shame of others having done more with their life than you was a relatable(and is a new moral for the show), and I liked it. I found Flurry Heart to be annoying myself, and questioned why they didn't know the unicorn foal power reigning in spell. Why isn't it a common spell?

Lastly, did you notice the Changeling at the end? Perhaps the finale has been revealed with this.

reply

Are you talking about the figure flying toward the Crystal Kingsdom as the train pulls away? It's possible, but it could have been anything, a pony, dragon, bird, griffin. But it is an intriguing idea, and now that you mention it, it does seem a little deliberate.

reply

Yes, I am, and have you seen the closeup? That outline is clearly a Changling. If it is not some background joke from the animators it could be that Queen Chrysalis will be back for revenge against Shining Armor and Cadence. I've been waiting for them to bring back a villain like that.

reply

Well, I hope you're right. You have a good eye. I did notice that detail, but didn't think anything of it until I read your post.

reply

This raises issues, though.

If the Crystal Heart had no such powers to begin with, why did the Crystal Ponies decide to settle in the middle of a frozen wasteland covered by chaotic magical blizzards so powerful not even the two strongest alicorns can so much as hold back?

It makes the background of the whole Empire implausible from the start!

From what we're told, we can only assume a bunch of ponies wandered into the Frozen North and got damned lucky they found a Super McGuffin before they froze to death!

That's NOT well-planned fictional world-building.

reply

Not if it was not always a frozen wasteland or they moved to escape something bad. WORLD BUILDING! The Crystal Heart protects the land, and the climate had a major change so it allowed them to continue living there OR... The Crystal Ponies moved because an awful tyrant descended upon them and they thought they would be safe from Sombra in the frozen north.

The reason isn't important, just that some calamity befell them, and the Crystal Heart is an old relic they use to protect where ever they are living. Remember that the Heart's presence protected them, NOT it being in the center of the city. So this still makes sense.

reply

Yeah... see... if they ACTUALLY EXPLAINED ALL THAT it would be world building.

What you're doing is thinking up baseless excuses to cover the show's failure to adequately craft its world.

What they actually did do was throw in yet another contrivance with zero explanations that will assuredly be left totally unexplored and unexplained, as with so many other dangling plot threads in the show.

reply

Flurry Heart was horribly over-powered and over-competent.

How on earth is a newborn capable of flawless teleportation, something it took Twilight several seasons to master... despite her being both powerful AND skilled in magic?

Flurry Heart = Puff from "Fairly Oddparents", nuff said.

reply

Pumpkin and Pound, nuff said.

The real issue is why that spell isn't standard for unicorn foals.
