Why do so many grown men like this show?

Just wondering, it's a little weird.

reply

Same reason adults like children's shows they watched as kids themselves, it feels like a show that would have been out when we were young, so it feels like we've grown up with it.

That's my personal reason for liking it (the "to the point" version, without going overly detailed). Why do people (still) watch anything that's aimed at kids? There's obviously something that speaks to you about it. I personally think this show to be well written enough to be taken seriously, but at the same time still obviously a children's show, so we can watch it, and feel that we are watching something with a decent amount of thought, but still feel the nostalgia of being children (though I'm mostly talking about the first two seasons, no offense to people who find the later seasons just as good or even better).

Long story short, it's not that different from looking back at a children's show you watched when you were a child, we all have a childish side deep down, or most of us do. If we didn't then there wouldn't be any desire from anyone to create children's shows, because no one would care enough to make any good ones.

But, each to their own.

ok

Actually, I didn't, but I know that if I had given it a chance I would have done. I just remember the kind of shows I liked as a kid, so I know that if this had aired back then, I would have watched it, and if I had watched previous versions (referred to as "generations") of MLP as a kid, I would have watched them too.

I love them all now, and it really does feel like I watched them as a kid, even though I didn't. I guess if it reaches your inner child, so to speak, it affects you enough to create a kind of sentiment, that feels like it goes further back than it does.

Good writing, good voice acting, good animation, complex and diverse yet relatable characters, good world building.

good world building.

So why don't you guys watch Adventure Time, that is at least a little more mature and does a way better job at building worlds.

Why a show about ponies?

reply

Who says we don't enjoy both?
I know I do.

But I don't see Adventure Time having the same fanbase of grown men like My Little Pony does.

reply

It has exactly the same fanbase; it's just that MLP isn't SUPPOSED to have the same fanbase, so it comes across as weird.

I personally love MLP and Adventure Time. Why does this bother you so much? What I watch at home has no affect on your life. You don't know me. I don't care what you watch. This show has great writing, great voice acting, and it just makes you feel good to watch it. With all the negativity in the world, forgetting it all and just immersing yourself in Equestria is a great escape. Where is this rule that states that once you are past a certain age you have to stop enjoying cartoons? And don't even get me started on gender. Don't tell me that MLP is a show for girls. That is ridiculous. When I was a kid I much preferred She-Ra over He-Man. I watched Strawberry Shortcake, My Little Pony, Care Bears. People like what they like, and you shouldn't judge anyone for it!

reply

Chill man, I was just wondering what you enjoy about it. Watch what you love! Who cares who it's aimed towards?

"Macklin, you son of a bitch ..."

If you have to ask "why a show about ponies?", you probably won't get it. This and Adventure Time are very different shows, yet there's no reason people can't watch both. Frankly, it's got better characters, better story, and it's far more clever than Adventure Time if you ask me.. but if you're stuck on the fact that they're anthropomorphic ponies, well that's on you.

reply

I personally always liked these kind of shows. Hell, I never stopped watching cartons period.

Right on! Same here!

Because they enjoy it.

reply

Because hot girls look sexy cosplaying them at conventions. Duh!

you mean the children that watch the show? why dont you have a seat.

It is a very positive show with a lot of heart, not to mention well written, animated, and voice acted. My taste in movies leans toward the more serious side, so when I found the show it was like a bit of lighthearted relief from that. While I will certainly acknowledge that there are other children's shows out there right now that are also very good, and I have seen a number of them, they just don't carry the same uplifting attitude that this show does.

reply

That's very true. Probably 90% of what I watch is horror movies, and while I love them it's nice to have a more light-hearted show to watch that's actually well made.

reply

Hot naked babes.

Seriously, it has the attitude that the first 20ish seasons of Sesame Street did, as well as The Muppet Show and Fraggle Rock that, while being appropriate for kids, it could be appealing to adults.

And also we've been letting the media kind of generalise what men are into. Do all girls enjoy watching chick flicks and shopping? Of course not. There are plenty of girls who'd enjoy watching 300 or playing Grand Theft Auto, so the reverse is true. Humans have a wide range of interests and the media has often just loved to narrow it down to the Mars/Venus gender contrast: boys like guns and violence, girls like cuteness and fashion. The diversity in female interests is getting a lot of traction in mainstream media, we just haven't seen the opposite come to attention yet

I like this show because I still enjoy cartoons and would still occasionally watch Rugrats, Sabrina or other things I watched when I was younger. The writing is also very good, the characters are all likable and entertaining and the episodes usually go out of their way to subvert a lot of typical kid show cliches. It just happens to have a group of females as the majority of its cast. The media likes to teach us that boys can't be interested in girl things, hence the token girl in many other shows. If the leads in this were male, there would be a lot less questioning

Well said!

Basically it come down to.. Why do you care? Why is it your business what I watch? If I like it, I like it. I don't need to explain myself.

reply

Why do you all get so upset and defensive when asked about this show? The OP was being genuinely curious. Also, the comparison someone made to girls liking 300 and GTA was a strange one as those are aimed at adults solely, definitely not for kids.

reply

This one dude you're responding to got a little defensive (in a couple of messages, I think) so that means everyone else who responded also got defensive?

The OP was not particularly offensive in his questioning, but he did state that liking the show "was a little weird," and then suggested that Adventure Time was "more mature," and asked why people didn't watch that instead. I could see either of those being construed as slights to the fan base, whether or not he meant it that way.

To answer the OP's question, I like the show because I like cartoons, and I like cute things. I also find the show clever, and sometimes funny, depending upon the writer. I like the characters, I like the character designs, I like the art, and I like the imagination. It's colorful and fun. And stuff and things.

reply

Didn't mean to offend anyone, was just expressing my opinion on the large fan-base of grown men. Sorry I guess.

"Macklin, you son of a bitch ..."

reply

I wasn't really all that offended by your original post, or else I might've responded sooner. I was irritated enough by the person I responded to to actually say something, which is why I responded at all. I think. I first responded to this thread a while ago.

reply

Gasp. That's rude and offensive. The large male fan-base of this show are not rapists. Tsk.

So you dont want wanna f..k with them ?
They are so cute. But not as Powerpuff girls. And i am not zoophil. ;)
