Deborah

Does anyone else loathe the secretary? She's rude, she's nosy and thus far [I'm only three episodes in] she doesn't do her job she just passes judgement. The episode with the writer was just painful as she was slagging off his books. Who speaks like that to another person? She's so thoroughly repugnant. Does she ever get likable?

I think her smart-aleck attitude is supposed to be humorous. The opinionated, sharp-tongued office assistant is a bit of a cliche, and I think that's what the character is supposed to be. I find her interesting and not annoying.

The scene with Deborah knocking Martin's books is supposed to be ironic. He's a successful writer, while she's a lowly secretary. Who is she to find fault with his books? And Martin is so mousy, he just takes it.

I have to say I enjoy her and her realtionship with Jackson.

That's a very good point. She's got such strong opinions on what good writing is (and isn't), but has she ever been published? I seriously doubt it.

(Just watched it in USA, so late to the thread...) She's annoying, but haven't you met people like her? If anything, I found Martin's extreme "mousiness" a bit unrealistic. I think her relationship with Brodie would be more clichéd if she were in love with him. Everyone can have opinions on books (or movies), and it seems Martin isn't too proud of his own work either. Remember at the end, we are told he threw away the memory stick with his latest work on it, and muttered something about Mark Twain, so she got to him.
