Abusive Nasty Female Characters

Love the series. Jackson Brody has flaws but he is very likeable. Kudos to Jason Isaacs. But oh, the women: his DC pal (former lover) and his bitchee assistant are something else. They are so nasty to Jackson. They are verbally abusive. He never responds in kind. He never lashes out. He takes it like a whipped dog. Now I ask you. If male characters were to talk to a female character in the same way, wouldn't there be feminist howls across the Internet? Is the author of the books a total man-hater or is this the way Scottish women treat their men?
