Despite being tagged as a comedy...

...this was definitely not a comedy. Yes, the plot involves a disgraced samurai engaging in some undignified comedy sketches to appease the son of a clan leader, but the movie really doesn't come together until the last 15 minutes. This is one of those movies that definitely redeems itself in the final act, so don't let the forced comedy turn you off.

Disagree. How is this NOT a comedy? The story (and more important the ending) works because it is a comedy, because everything is played for laughs. Saying that the movie redeems itself in the last 15 minutes is just demeaning to a wonderfully crafted and acted little gem of a movie.

You make it sound like it being a comedy is a bad thing, I think, like most great movies it cannot be boxed into o e specific genre, as with all of Hitoshi's movies so var. it's a masterpiece and going into it thinking is a comedy only works to its benefit, I really did not expect to be shedding so many man tears by the end of it.

Amazing movie!

How did you see it? It's not on DVD.

Agreed 100%. The movie is very weak on the comedic side but redeems itself big time with an awesome, sweet and touching ending.
