Any Chance?

I'm really liking this show(AND SHELLEY HENNIG!). However as most everyone on here knows it's been getting terrible viewer ratings. I have no idea how MTV goes about it's particular shows, but is there ANY chance of the first, and most likely only, season of 'Zach Stone' getting an official dvd release? I mean the show is clearly not going to get a second season with it's ratings. So would MTV release a dvd for a show that didn't do well with the network's viewers and which only lasted for a single season?

reply

Absolutely. In fact, MTV almost always release their shows on DVD, even if they aren't successful. MTV Skins and Inbetweeners got DVD releases but weren't renewed past the initial 12 episodes. Although, they also do deals where their DVDs are only available on amazon sometimes.

Thanks for the info. I really hope 'Zach Stone' makes it onto dvd. The reason I asked was because a previous show Shelley Hennig(I'm a fanatic) was in, 'The Secret Circle', was cancelled right after it's first season on CW. The CW then announced that it would not be releasing the series on dvd due to the show only having had a single season. The CW is known for not releasing dvds of shows that don't get renewed. So I was just wondering if MTV works the same way, or has the same policy, as the CW when it comes to single season shows.

The Cw and other networks have nothing to do with the DVD releases unless they're the production company and the distributor.

The CW buys the over air distributions rights to most their series but they're not resposible for releasing DVDs.

CBS who is the parent company of the CW only releases DVDs of series they have deals with to distribute DVDs. CBS doesn't do the DVD distribution for all the series they air on their own network since some series are produced by FOX and other studios that also produce series.

"Buffy the Vampire Slayer" initially aired on the WB and later the CW when UPN and CBS merged their two networks but the series itself was produced by 4 companies one of them being 20th Century Fox and they're' the ones that do the DVD releases in most countries.

"The Secret Circle" was also produced by 4 companies the CW, CBS and two other companies if they ever decided to release a DVD it would be through CBS Entertainment's division that releases DVDs.

MTV owns the distribution rights to this series so they most likely would make the series available on DVD, I don't like the series ironically it was available as a torrent before it aired on MTV I saw the first episode and I didn't like it, but to the best of my knowledge "The Secret Circle" is available for streaming and DVD from Netflix and some other sites and all 22 episodes are available on torrent sites. The only reason I came over here is because I was watching "The Secret Circle" and wondered if she had found some other projects besides this series.

Ms. Hennig is only 26 so I'm sure she'll find other work if her current series doesn't get renewed.

I know at one time there were companies like CBS that would burn custom a DVD for series that weren't very popular or only lasted one season, they usually cost more than other DVDs, since they're not made in bulk.

I've also seen distribution deals that resulted in DVDs only being released in a certain country if the company that had the distribution rights goes out of business or had financial problems then DVDs get delayed or unreleased for years.

Movies will make you famous; Television will make you rich; But theatre will make you good.

Thanks a lot for all the info that you've provided in your post. It definitely gives me a much better understanding in regards as to why certain series do or do not get a DVD release. So thanks.

I've been wondering what projects Ms. Hennig will be in next as well, since it appears that her role in 'Zach Stone' was limited to the show's first 4 episodes only. If you happen to find out about any future/upcoming projects she'll be featured in, it'd be great if you could drop a notice on her board, if it's not too much trouble of course. And I'll certainly do the same if I find out about anything as well.

Maybe if it wasn't on after that piece of crap "talk" show with Vinny it would have more of a chance. Sucks.

reply

Well I know the chance for the show having a second season is basically nil, nada, zilch. However I was asking if there's a chance that we might get a dvd release of the first season.

In defense of MTV, I think they thought The Show with Vinny would rate better than it has. The Jersey Shore was a very popular show, so I bet they thought they could lure a handful of Vinny fans over to his own show. But obviously that hasn't happened.

I still wish though that ZS had a better time-slot. To me, this is the type of show that will catch on late and many people will love years from now. It will probably go on Netflix streaming and get a DVD release and will develop a following. It's too bad MTV won't move ZS to another time-slot for its remaining episodes, just to give it a fair try. I think Mondays at 11/10c after Teen Wolf could be a good time-slot for it. TW has started to catch on. It premiered to its highest ratings yet this season, so it could possibly help a show like Zach Stone.

They just changed Zach Stones times lot. Iit now airs at 11

Yes, I think there will be a chance that it gets a DVD release. MTV released both Skins and Good Vibes on DVD, and they both lasted only for a single season. Also, it may make its way to Netflix instant streaming. A few of MTV's shows are available there. So if you have Netflix you may be able to watch it there at some point.
