Point of reference for Bo Burnam's style of comedy is Bo Burnam...

People really have a difficult time grasping the solipsistic nature of Bo Burnam's comedy style, and this show is actually the most revealing example I've seen of this unique style.

You see, reality is not even the reference point for anything in this show. This is not a "sitcom," but a surrealist painting of one. The characters are nothing more than vehicles for Bo's comedy, and their resemblance to actual human roles ("mother, father, girlfriend, brother, etc") are merely incidental. Everything in the show is designed by Bo to do nothing more than carry his comedy forward, without regard for any depth whatsoever regarding those characters, with a few exceptions that actually seem out of place alongside the rest of the show. A "plot" is necessary in that it keeps everything from becoming too abstract, but it is merely a skeleton, and is MEANT to be "seen through."

I imagine it must be difficult for the other actors to grasp and accept their relative meaninglessness within the show, but they should be proud to be a part of such a grand experiment.

Bo Burnam is to comedy as Richard Brautigan was to American Literature, and similarly under-appreciated as a genuine artist. It's too bad, honestly.
