Why the mask?

Perhaps this has been brought up before, but why bother with the mask when in his lair? He obviously killed everyone he came in contact with (well, except Arkin.) And was he a mute? Sure seems unnecessary after he obtained his victims. I guess it was to scare them more, but by the time he has so many drugged up and tied up I doubt they cared, mask or not.

It could be a psychological thing. Perhaps he didn't want to associate himself as a psycho murderer, so "The Collector" was more of an alter ego that he didn't want to see himself as.

Because it's a movie and it would take the creepiness away if it was just some dude with a normal face walking around. Maybe it's a personal thing. He likes to wear it for fun? Cuz' he's a flipping psychopath. Or maybe he is disfigured. Or maybe he doesn't want the chance of someone who has seen his face escaping and telling the police...? there could be a hundred different answers.

Also no, he's not mute. He speaks at the end of the film.

Also, Marcus Dunstan confirmed that a third installment is written and ready to go. And in an interview it seemd like he wants to touch on The Collector's past a bit more. So, who knows. The mask may hold a very special meaning. Or symbolize something. Remember they hinted his father was a serial killer as well. Maybe it was his dad's mask.

Well he wasn't wearing the mask when he was at his lair after he captured Elena he only the put the mask on when he saw the intruders. I guess he puts it on to put more fear into his victims, and incase one of them escapes they can't identify him.
