Vampire Theory
Perhaps Maggie is a vampire. The cult is a ruse to get access to blood from unsuspecting followers. That is why Maggie never leaves the basement. She is avoiding exposure to sunlight.

There is literally no basis to this 'theory'. Plus she leaves the basement at the end, and judging by the blast of light when she's taken away, I think it's safe to assume this happens during daylight.
