for those that saw both this and Another Earth...

Wondering if anyone disliked Another Earth (like me), but saw this film and liked it?

reply

yes.

that's good. I strongly disliked "Another Earth" (even though going in I really wanted to like it), I think mostly because the directing felt so poorly done. since both movies are written by Brit Marling I was worried I wouldn't like Sound of My Voice as well.

reply

Another Earth was enjoyable, but I definitely had my gripes about it.

Sound of my Voice had less criticisms from me, and was more gripping overall.

Brit Marling was undeniably great in both though.

reply

YES, I did.

^ This review gave me pause for reconsideration... checked it out, and really dug it. ANOTHER EARTH was false and precious, IMO... and problematically cast, with Mapother. SOMV is much, much better.

I loved Another Earth and Sound of My Voice, but I found Another Earth to be more rewarding and optimistic. Sound of My Voice was more thrilling and easier to get into though.

Liked Another Earth very much; wasn't sure at first, but eventually I was seduced by the cinematography, the acting, the script, the dreamy poetic-ness of it.

reply

I liked both and thought both were very good. However, I enjoyed "Sound of My Voice" much better! I saw it 3 times and consider it one of my favorites! Films that are open-ended with many stories and possible plots intrigue me and are my favorites! Isn't that how life really is - having many various choices, scenarios, and outcomes that you create through your own perceptions? I'm hoping that there is a trilogy of this in the future.

reply

I liked both. Sure, neither are perfect but both have very interesting and thought-provoking themes, and I just love the quality that Marling (on modest budgets) brings to modern cinema.

A long way from perfect, Another Earth had the potential to be good, unfortunately, the director, script writer, editors, actors ... in fact everyone involved in it turned what was an interesting idea into rubbish.

Now I'm not even sure I should give Marling another go as this seems far from perfect and the imdb score seem suspiciously high.

reply

Yes, I hated Another Earth it was a huge waste of time for me. This movie was brilliant. I voted for 1 for Another Earth and 8 for this movie on imdb.

reply

Really? A 1? I mean, it was THAT bad? It was bad enough to literally get the worst score possible?

Any movie that can keep its images in focus and capture good sound is worth better than a 1. . .

reply

I am guessing buffnfaith was getting "Another Earth" mixed up with "After Earth"!

Serious.

I mean, with *Another* Earth you might have hated the ending or certain film-making choices, but still gotta give it props overall for its solid storytelling and editing and acting -- worth a 6+ even for someone who is very particular, when you compare it with the lowest common denominator pablum that is put out there from Hollyweird that is truly deserving of a 2 or a 1 (see, again, "After Earth" ;) )

I was disappointed in both "Another Earth" and "Sound Of My Voice."

Each had what seemed like killer concepts but neither were explored to their creative potentials.

AMEN! Totally agree! Both premise looked SO promising and interesting and original, the realization on the other hand was definitively a let-down in both cases.

I mean another earth that was invisible to us the whole time? Another earth that happens to be totally identical to this one wherein the inhabitants all lived in perfect synchronicity with the people of this earth? Synchronicity that was lost as soon as each world discovered the other?? How AWESOME is that for a premise?!

And then what do we get? Boring melodrama about some personal tragedy that had hardly anything to do with the awesome premise of the story!
Such disappointment!

And don't get me wrong, i don't dislike drama or movies that depict real people living normal average lives, not at all. What i don't accept is being lured into watching a movie based on false promises!

How can anybody write such an original and interesting premise and then not exploit it at all?

It's like watching a version of Matrix that would start with Morpheus explaining to Neo that all this is a mere computer simulation, that the world is destroyed and that we are slaves to machines that use us as glorified batteries and suddenly the scene changes and you hear a voice over saying "Meanwhile, 479 miles from there, Billy Ray was tending to his farm" and then we would watch for 2 hours Billy Ray stacking hay for the winter with his pitchfork while cows are grazing in the background in front of a beautiful autumn sunset. THE END - Closing credits roll -_-'

When i think of Another Earth, i can't help but reminisce that classic scene in Misery when Annie Wilkes (Kathy Bates) looses her grip while telling the story of when she used to go to the cinema Saturdays when she was a kid and says: "I stood right up [in the cinema] and started shouting "THIS ISN'T WHAT WAS WRITTEN IN THE SYNOPSIS, HAVE YOU ALL GOT AMNESIA? THEY JUST CHEATED US, THIS ISN'T FAIR! THIS ISN'T WHAT WAS WRITTEN IN COCKADOODLE SYNOPSIS"" Hahahahhah

Here's the real scene with the real dialogs for those interested or who don't know what i'm talking about: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AVzX22lrWxA

Anyway, to each his own obviously, but as for me, Another Earth was a huge disappointment.

I liked Another Earth (6/10), but I liked Sound of my voice (7/10) even more.

Another Earth had an extremely promising plot that I think could have been more enjoyable than it was. I was prepared for a thrilling scifi-movie when it was more like a tragic drama. Still good though.

Sound of my voice was slightly better as it was very enticing to try and decide whether Maggie is a fraud or not. The ending was also quite perfect in a sense that it still left us wondering. I'm really looking forward to anything that Brit Marling will be writing, I really love her work.

reply

I disliked both, and probably wont watch another film from this person again after both of these. Very boring and it was not a thriller at all as it's labeled. Though this was slightly better than the last movie if only because it wasted less of my time being about 10 minutes shorter lol.

reply

I don't know what's up with all the negative comments. I'm not sure what everyone was expecting. I really like how Brit Marling plays with ideas of destiny, sci-fi and the human condition so seamlessly -not to mention all done on a budget. I liked both Another Earth and SOMV. Open your mind people.
