There was a boy there and it was 100% cult, no time travel

I just re-watched it, not only a little boy was there but also they were taking blood from him, before ushering him to the basement.

Cults are very prepared to fool its followers. They do not just randomly take people, they gather intel and then get people in. They also weed out those who are not gullible, like the Asian guy. Prior to the bringing people in, they collect all their stories because they snoop on them. That is why DOJ woman searched for bugs, as she knew cult's tactics.

Finally, the handshake, the only alleged evidence of time travel. Since the cult has been snooping, it was not hard to snoop on a girl as well. Just like someone mentioned before the handshake is not something you do alone, you will need a partner. So it would be easy to snoop on a girl too.

DOJ showed the photos of Maggie, so she was not who she claimed to be. The whole point of the movie was to instal doubt into the audience to show how cults recruit and operate.

First off - if you look for an interview by the film makers - they will tell you both answers are correct.

DOJ in Hotel Room - Who's hotel room was she bugging or fiddling with? I think it was her own. If the cult has the ability to preemptively bug the hotel room of a a secret investigator, well then.. this cult may indeed be from the future. I would assume she was setting up bugs or some sort of secret technology. That's a lot of work concealing it if it is. This scene is one of the strongest (if not the strongest) pro time-travel scenes I would say.

Handshake - It's a fairly elaborate handshake, it's never explained any way. Did they somehow spy it? (far-fetched but possible) Is she in on the con? Is she related to Abigail in a real world way like being her mother? (the most common theory) Or is she as she says, Abigail's daughter? None of them are ruled out.

DOJ point - Remember Maggie was on the street for a period of term in the Time Travel version - these could have been taken from that time. You would know that the Time Travel theory explains the DoJ as a possible agent from the future, as well, which could give this person a lot of power.

Remember, it's a movie, not real life. She can be from the future. It's open.

IF the cult knew about the DOJ, how exactly would they have known which room to bug?

The cult would have to be extremely powerful to have all that foreknowledge.

AND if the cult knew about her, why take the risk to have Maggie arrested?

Funny thing though: Maggie actually says a few minutes earlier in the movie (just after the worm eating session) that the group will have to continue WITHOUT her - as if she knew she would be arrested.

I haven't read all of the posts and am still planning to watch this film again but your theory sounds pretty reasonable to me.

The boy at the beginning is important and DoJ woman's conversation with Lorna about Mag's story includes some information about that the cult, for some reason, has something to do with kids. I first thought it may be about Maggie's sickness. Maybe the cult seeks treatment for her.
