Is Maggie really Abigail's mother?

1. They do look alike.
2. We never see Abigail's mother.
3. That could explain the "secret" handshake - Maggie taught it to her when she was younger.

Of course, if Abigail was old enough to learn a (very) complicated handshake before Maggie left her, she'd probably recognize her and yell "Mommy!" when she sees her again, so it's not an air tight theory... if she isn't being injected with some strange drug to make her forget her mother... which would explain the injection scene :)

Yeah man, I believe she is Abigail's mom. I can also believe that a personality such as Abigail's would have an easier time remembering a handshake from years ago then a face , as it seems she has a hard time connecting to people in general. Or, her reason for not remembering her mother can just be that she was around whatever criminal organization Maggie was into but just not with her mom, they ALL did the handshake, so Abigail learned it from one of the criminals who baby sat while Maggie was out forming her "militia" and going on crime sprees.

Another theory just popped up into my mind - perhaps Abigail and Maggie are not related, but Abigails father was once a member of Maggies sect, and he taught the handshake to Abigail after he was kicked out of the sect for whatever reason?

reply

Yup, that's what I was leaning towards... it just lends itself to the theory of the criminal militia and how they all do the handshake, so whatever is possible within that realm, I just don't believe in the whole Abigail is Maggie's mom nonsense, nope nope foh.

Just watched it, wasn't it Abigale was Maggie's mom?

reply

(Yes, Abigale is Maggie's mom in the film, but the people in this thread are trying to find other explanations, like perhaps Maggie was actually Abigale's mom.)

You people trying to explain the many different things re: Maggie and Abigale's relationship are missing a bit point: the dialog between them when Abigale asked how Maggie knew the handshake, that was the film telling you that in this story, yes, Maggie really was from the future and Abigale is her mom. There IS no other explanation.

So this is a bonehead thread for people that weren't paying attention.

Maggie isn't from the future because time travel is impossible plus she was exposed by the DOJ and the Chinese guy (Maggie uses a song by The Cranberries). Maggie is an obvious con woman. It appears her purposes are quite simply criminal in nature. As far as Abigail's relationship to her - you can only postulate. A lot of it isn't made clear and there is a very good reason. This film was supposed to be part of a trilogy. The filmmakers ran out of money and couldn't get more so they used the footage they had for only one movie - which became "Sound of my Voice". It's an unfinished work. You can only guess as to what really happened. My guess would be, of course knowing time travel is impossible and Maggie is a con woman, that Abigail's Father had some involvement with either Maggie or the cult, and he taught the handshake to Abigail. As far as Maggie's interest in Abigail, she probably is Abigail's Mother.
