The ear peircing....did it symbolize her losing her virginity?

They just danced in their underwear shared a kiss and a fake french kiss, he gets an erection, she says its hard, he feels her up. Then they are both in the tent still in their underwear she is screaming in pain obviously, while he sticks the fishhook thru her earlobe for the first time since her ears were not peirced, then they show the ear with the trickle of blood down her neck. I just put all of that together and felt it symbolized her losing her virginity.

reply

Yes...and the next thing she says is do the other one....meaning anal.

Holy shit, this made me laugh.🤣

I didn't catch this the first time, but I saw the movie again last night, and that scene happened, and I thought the same thing. Symbolically, of course. It's not eye-rolling to think the that - I genuinely think that was the intent.

reply

stephan-128 thanks for a educated response. I too feel that was the intent with that scene.

Everyone loves "A" educated response. A+

reply

Your response was the best one in the thread. A+ would read again.

reply

I agree...its pretty good symbolism

reply

is just a fishhook earring.

reply

if it was just a fishhook earring, that would have been that and there would have been no need for her ear to be pierced

reply

Yeah, because piercing your ears isn't a step towards growing up or anything...

reply

Its not. its just what some people do for fashion because society tells thme they must. it has nothing to do with actual growing up neither mentally nor biologically.

reply

A lot of kids want their ears pierced because they think it will make them seem older. It's a symbol of not being a kid anymore, you moron.

reply

like i said, stupid societal pressures that has nothing to do with age and everything to do with emulating others.

reply

Some people pierce their ears or other parts as an initiation, a rite of passage which marks an achievement or new phase in life. This can be a social experience, but it can also be completely individual.

reply

What a shame you've lost all concept of innocence, if ever you had one. He gave her a gift which required ear-piercing. If she had lost her virginity, the point would have been made. Doesn't anybody remember first, adolescent love? In this day and age, maybe not, sad to say. For 1965, this was entirely appropriate.

Losing his/her virginity symbolizes ear piercing.

reply

Another reference might have been of manhood. Sam kills two beetles to make Suzy's gift, and uses fish hooks, a reference perhaps to Jesus when he says "I will make you fishers of men", Taken in the non-religious sense Sam gift signifies manhood and love as intrinsically tied spiritual pursuits.

reply

Or maybe it was just pierced ears and represented her becoming more detached from her parents

reply

The ear piercing does symbolize sex, but not between Sam & Suzy. The relationship of Sam & Suzy is a metaphor for the relationship between Captain Sharp and Mrs. Bishop ... hence the reason we never learn their first names. The portrayal of Sam & Suzy's relationship demonstrates all the feelings of love and innocence that are awakened in Captain Sharp and Mrs. Bishop. The sexual innuendos between Sam & Suzy symbolize sex between the two adult characters involved in an illicit affair ... not sex between two kids.

reply

We learn that Mrs. Bishop's first name is Laura, and Captain Sharp's first name is Duffy.

reply

LOL. I read this comment as “Mr. Bishop” corrects Cap. Sharp in the car for referring to “Mrs Bishop” as Laura

Hi, Monetteb6!

I've never seen it that way, but I can see your point. However, I do not think they got that far. The whole dancing scene, with the kissing and boob-thouching, looked really awkward to me. I do not remember if they even kiss again at all later on in the movie. I think they felt it was something that had to be done considering the circumstances (the "elopement", the two of them alone in a romantic atmosphere), but that they were not ready for. It was done more because they perceived it as mandatory rather than because of the urge for it.
I think it was all part of the game where they were playing a traditional adult couple (he would protect her and provide her with food and a place to live; she would take care of the house and the kitten and read novels out loud after dinner).

The ear pearcing might just symbolize she has started walking down the path that will lead her to lose her verginity some day. She discovered some sort of physical attraction towards him. She liked to be close to him, to talk to him.

The pearced ears made her feel older and mature. I know little girls often have their ears pearced, but in this case she did it by her own decision. Maybe for the first time she got to decide over her own body. Even more important, it is him who pearces her ears. I think it has to do with an ideal emancipation from her parents and the discovery of the rest of the world through her own body. This implies a sexual aspect too, but I think the director's intentions were more subtle: before meeting him she used to reject everybody through her own body, with an aggressive/violent behaviour. And now everything was slowly changing.

Yet again, this is just my opinion.

one getting their ears pierced at a pagoda in the mall where it's quick and efficiently done with an ear piercing gun vs someone with a fish hook. jabbing it into your skin...I bet you'd scream bloody murder, too. As a matter of fact, let's try it on you and see how you well you sit there and not say a bloody word. :P

I think you nailed it, missstrindberg, except I'm almost certain nothing happened beyond what we saw on screen.

I thought that was a reach at first, but it makes sense, when I remembered the blood. This was a symbolic movie.
And knowing this makes it funnier when her mother wonders how to remove the hooks - like all teen mothers wish they could undo their daughter's decisions.

reply

I bet many here see Jesus in a piece of toast as well as are carrying members of the tinfoil hat club, plus a couple pervs like the one taking about piercing sounding like doing a virgin. It's just ear piercing and humorous in that despite it hurting she immediately says, do the other one, the end. God damn the internet is filled with some weird weird people.

reply

The OP shared a valid interpretation of the scene. Nothing weird about it.
