HE Seemed kinda retarded

Like maybe he had a mild form of downs syndrome? i'm not trying to be mean or a jerk, bu it seemed like that was part of it. His mouth always hanging open, the way they muted and unmuted the DR so you get the impression he can;t even understand him, and just his general stupidity (amazed at the video games, playing with guns like a child, showing his scar to everyone). Was he retarded you think? Or is this just how southerners are?

reply

im pretty sure its from all the medication he was taking. and his wife mentions in the scene in like the cvs pharmacy that he hasnt been the same person since he returned and the medication changes him into a different person. He even mentions it a few times how hes different from all the meds. They mention it throughout the film.

I'm sorry but I burst out laughing when I read this line. I am sure if anybody reads that and they are southern they are going to have a fit. But it was hilarious. But no, I don't think it was because he was southern. It's because he was on Oxycontin which is literally the same as heroin, it's only one molecule away.

reply

I'm Southern, and I actually thought the same thing...not about "being Southern," but that he lacked intelligence, majorly. I think it was primarily due to the meds, but the exposure in this film was very unflattering.

reply

Of course he was retarded...

``I want to kill people, that's why I joined the marines!``... that is retarded...even without meds.

reply

And what do you think the young fighters of the Taliban say when they're recruited? It's not much different. Actually some Afghans have bigger balls and more courage than the damn majority of America. At least they pick up a weapon and fight unlike 95% of the disenfranchised, ignorant brats of the American youth.

reply

Lower level of intellect for sure. He seemed like he was already broken before the military. Saying he always wanted to kill someone. I wish they would have focused on someone else that I would have cared about.

"I did not hit her.... I did not!" Oh hi imdb.com

As a Marine myself who served over there (same area, just a few months after this Sergeant), he did not represent the Corps well. It was pretty embarrasing but the reason he was acting that way is due to the medication he was on. This movie was following someone who was essentially high on heroin the entire movie.

i'm so glad you said that...though i must point out he didn't seem much better when he was actually there and supposed to be leading.

i watched generation kill and while there seemed a few bad apples, i was left with a surprisingly good impression of their intelligence, ethics, and competence. this and restrepo took me a couple of steps back again...

your comment has restored my faith a bit haha.

...you are aware that 'Generation Kill' was a TV show with actors right? And that there isn't an actual Colonel Kurtz; that was Marlon Brando, an actor. Right?

Just checking... 'cause that whole "intelligence" thing you referenced to would make you look really bad; like as if you were some pretentious, "incompetent" little *beep* or something who doesn't know the first thing about "ethics". But I'm sure that's not the case.

no *beep* - i'm also aware it was based on a journalist (as depicted in the show) being inserted in the unit and travelling with them.

i'm also aware that i watched a long and detailed doco involving the people it was based on, who confirmed the portrayal was almost word for word, action for action, what actually happened. and their thoughtful and articulate opinions on their roles in the conflict left me with a better impression of US forces than i ever thought i could have (my entire original point).

i'm also aware there are two other books written by two other members of the unit whose accounts match the series.

i'm not aware who this 'colonel kurtz' is - but i'm guessing it was a sarcastic and misdirected attempt at suggesting i thought a character in some war movie was real.

He had a huge dip in his mouth most of the time which would help explain the mouth hanging open concern.

reply

It was probably just the accent that made him seem slow.

Of course he wasn't perfect, they didn't want this to be a propaganda piece for the US. marines.

These 'grunts' aren't usually the sharpest, most eloquent intellectuals. They are highly trained killers. With that and the medication he's on, what did you expect?
