Disgusting

This show is disgusting. Their entire lives revolve around going out and killing alligators during alligator season. These alligators have lived 60, 80, 100 years in their own territory and these *beep* men come into the alligator's territory to kill them just so people can have alligator purses and shoes. Disgusting. And that fact that the men enjoy it so much borders on sociopathic.

It's not like there is any shortage of gators. Here in Florida we have more gators now than we did 50 years ago. I love my alligator belt.

reply

@Maddox..cough cough i mean paris hilton..good luck with that belt..

It's not they are going out there to just kill alligator. They are going out there to help keep the alligator numbers down.

You should read up on gator harvesting. They catch the gators for profit. This is a highly regulated business by Federal and various State regulations. The point is not to keep the alligator numbers down, but to allow a reasonable and sustainable harvest by licensed hunters for the value that this natural resource provides.

The hunters are only indirectly providing a small public service through their harvest, as very few gators are a threat to civilization. Did you ever see any houses or human habitation in the bayous where they are catching the gators?

reply

I know it's hard but use your common sense for a minute. If there's mass overpopulation of gators that would lead to a shortage of food in their natural swamp habitat. If there's a shortage of food for them do you think they're just going to sit there and die or are they going to go to other areas looking for food? This would lead to gators showing up in more areas heavily populated by humans. That's why the population is kept under control.

What would cause such a mass overpopulation? Nature keeps animal populations in balance. When animal populations exceed the carrying capacity (food supply) of the land or swamp in this case, birth rates go down, predation and diseases go up and the balance of nature is restored. This is how nature works and it has been working this way long before humans ever set foot in the New World.

So, "If there is mass overpopulation" would be caused by what exactly?

They have the hunt for one month to help regulate their numbers, just like deer. Alligators are FAR from endangered and not one ounce of those gators gets wasted. They don't just harvest the skin and throw the rest in the trash. Their meat is also harvested.

"You are a smelly pirate hooker!"
"Why don't you go back to your home on Whore Island?"

I have no problem with people making a living off of harvesting gators. Like others have said: It's highly regulated by the State/Government.

But what kills me is when people think that PEOPLE, have to regulate, and save nature from itself. Nature has regulated, and balanced itself just fine, for hundreds of millions of years, before the planet even sniffed a human.

It's we humans that have thrown nature out of balance, not nature itself. Species like deer, have population explosions, and need to be "regulated", because PEOPLE have wiped out the majority of the large predators that prey on them.

Alligators are overpopulated in Louisiana. They can become a danger.
