He wanted the stunt man role that Pitt won an Oscar for. Tarantino remarked, he "got all of my number ones." He also said casting the stunt man was related to the fading movie star -- the actors had to look similar.

I HAVE BEEN WANTING TO SEE A MOVIE WHERE CRUISE PLAYS BASICALLY A VERSION OF HIMSELF...WHO OVERSTEPS...GETS HATED/CANCELLED/WHATEVER AND FINDS HIMSELF HAVING TO ACTUALLY LIVE THE ACTION LIFESTYLE HE HAS SPENT HIS LIFE PRETENDING TO KNOW...TARANTINO WOULD BE THE ULTIMATE CHOICE TO WRITE/DIRECT.
