other love interests had J-Con said nah

which other late 40s actress couldve played the part of Mavericks squeeze had J Con refused? (52 but 48 at time of filming) obviously had to be someone cruise hadnt worked with before in a love interest role (and still looked good)

JLo 53 (49 at time of filming)
Jennifer Garner 50 (46 at time of filming)
Julia Roberts 54 (50)
Jen Aniston 53 (49)
CZJ 53 (49)

ultimately J-Con was probably best choice as the rest probably not so believable as maverick arm candy/too famous

Elizabeth Shue

Too old, plus has already starred alongside Cruise as a love interest (same for Demi Moore)

Marisa Tomei , Carla Gugino

Also:
Kate Beckinsale (too kooky?)
Jeri Ryan (not movie star enough?)
Sandra Bulock (too old?)
Halle Berry (too old?)
Monica Belluci (old old? too italian?)

Lauren Holly 59 (55)

reply

Wow way too old

reply

Still looks good though. She could have pulled it off.

CZJ?

There's no reason the love interest couldn't be a woman in her early 40s or even mid/late 30s. A hotshot career Navy flyboy could do well in even less than target rich environments.

I agree that Jennifer Connolly was perfect for this part.

Except Maverick had a history with Penny Benjamin, so the actress had to be old enough to have already had a relationship with him prior to the events depicted in the first film

Right, but no one here including me is saying Jennifer Connolly wasn't age appropriate for the Penny role (she was), only that the love interest written for Maverick could have easily been mid/late 30s to early 40s for a hotshot Navy pilot who was charismatic and handsome (even if a bit short without his shoe lifts...).

Whether JC could have played a totally different character than Penny who was in her mid to late 30s is up for debate, but as I said in my comment, JC was perfect for the role of Penny.
