Theory on Top Gun’s Success

It’s only a matter of time now until things swing back the other way and men are once again interested in earning money, driving fast cars, and banging hot women. The woke aspects of culture have pushed society too far, and the country’s remaining sane people are sick of it. It’s not enough to yearn for the superficial aspects of the 1980s…we want the lifestyle, too. Oh, and before I forget, another huge reason that the movie is doing well is because IT’S FUCKING AWESOME.

With a name like Guitar King, I know you understand what I’m talking about.

I don't think it's the 'woke' aspect per se but all the constant never ending Superhero films gets boring after awhile. They're still fun to watch but it's like again and again and again where you finally want something fresh to watch and this was it. Also, it's been awhile since we saw a new good US military movie on the big screen since (I think) American Sniper.

reply

It's a variety of factors. The film:

* is not woke

* is pro-America

* uses practical effects instead of a ton of CGI

* has Tom Cruise, who is still awesome at almost-60

* has awesome fighter jet action

* is a very well-crafted piece of entertainment

One thing I saw multiple times in various comments around the Internet is that it's a "real movie." And I agree, it feels like a real movie when so many other movies today simply do not.

reply

Some people on this forum insist the film is too woke. Funny, right?

Plus Tom Cruise...a straight white male...is in this movie? And it's making money? I was told that the "straight white male©" is slowly going the way of the buffalo. Good to see we still have the whites represented on screen in these tough, dire, and trying times. A lot of people might be beginning to forget what a white person even looks like. *wipes sweat off my brow*

reply

I am confused.

Who says men can't earn money?
Who says men can't drive fast cars?
Who says men can't bang hot women?

Are you having a conversation with an imaginary leftist in your head?
Is the leftist made entirely of straw?

reply

I live in Los Angeles and have never voted Republican (which I plan to change in 2024). My coworkers, friends (with the exception of one), and girlfriend are all progressive liberals. As a straight white male, it is absolutely out of fashion (at least in this city) to say:

1) “I want to keep working/saving/investing with the sole goal of having a few million bucks to my name by retirement age.”

2) “I love fast cars with internal combustion engines.” There are literally more Teslas on the road here (which yes, are admittedly very fast) than there are Hondas and Chevrolets.

3) “I love sport-fucking sexy, cis-gendered women simply because it’s fun.” Even amongst guys, it’s just not okay conversation like it used to be when I was a teen growing up on the east coast. A large portion of men seem to have voluntarily castrated themselves, and I have no idea why. What do they possibly have to gain by that? We’re animals. We like sex with genetically-gifted/viable females. What’s wrong with that?

So yeah, does this apply to all people? Of course not. No one said it did. But this movie seems to have WOKEn a lot of men up to what an exciting life in America used to look like, and can look like again.

reply

Oh, and before I forget…what do you guys think? Top Gun: Maverick, or Lorenzo’s Oil? This is about as close as they come.

reply

I find it very hard to believe that in L.A....LOS FUCKING ANGELES...people aren't having casual sex. That's like saying, "you know it's so hard to get laid in Vegas, bro!" Especially considering L.A. is known as the "city of sex" and people in L.A. get laid more often than any other state.

Maybe you are just hanging out with the wrong people? If a lot of the guys you are talking to say that they aren't going around and casually banging women because they don't want to do that, then just go hang out with other guys who do wanna do that...or just do it yourself.

reply

You’re right. I’m wrong. Thanks for straightening me out.

Oh, c'mon! Give me a break! I was just trying to help...just trying to reach out across this cesspool of a website crawling with trolls and cockroaches.
I know you didn't mean to hurt my feelings.

Guys are always last in line when it comes to any decent job because a women or minority having that good job is deemed more important in today's society.

reply

And yet guys are over-represented in the best jobs.

reply

Maybe because they work their asses off to be engineers and now women think they are entitled to those jobs without doing any of the work.

reply

Uh-huh. So when you say "men are last line," what you really mean is that they still get the jobs, but they're just working much, much harder. Oh, and profit-seeking firms are purposefully refusing to hire the best people. You haven't given your beliefs much thought.

Women surpassed men in higher ed decades ago -- I want to say back in the 80s. If they're earning more degrees, we might naively expect them to have higher-paying jobs, so what's your gripe?

reply

Also women are more represented in college today than men.

reply

Taking fluff courses. That's a meaningless statistic without comparing the courses/degrees. A liberal arts degree, for example, isn't even in the same league as e.g., an electrical engineering degree.

I honestly cant figure it out but here goes…. Its a throwback sequel of a very popular movie. It very unwoke, there is no preachy social stuff. Its a solid entertainer with theatrical appeal in terms of the fighter jets. Its a satisfying viewing experience and word of mouth spread. I dont just mean like yeah it was good you should go see it. I mean when families are figuring a movie to see someone that has already seen it wants to see it again and bring other people. The repeat viewership has to be remarkable. You dont run up this much dom box without a decent amount of repeat viewing. I guess in short its kinda everything a movie theater experience should be. Filmmakers take note.

reply

Because despite the very loud and vocal internet critics, the original Top Gun movie, and Tom Cruise are beloved by a large majority of movie lovers.

I don't think the woke aspect, or especially the pro America theme had anything to do with the success of Maverick.

The success of Maverick completely validates the original film. It shows that the critics of the original are what they always have been, which is a super loud and obnoxious MINORITY of snobbish, self-important internet geeks.

reply

Well said. At a time when the military makes videos about using the proper pronouns, a film like this is even more needed. Woke needs to die a painful death.
