Racist. Exploitative. Cultural prostitution.

These are accusations Chumash protesters hurled at Peter Iliff’s controversial new film “Rites of Passage,” which premiered last night at the Isla Vista Theatre.

^^ Lol. Love it!! xD

One Chumash citizen told a reporter, “I hang my head in shame for how the previous Chumash citizens acted. This was a movie interpretation, and I support it.”

The above quote, IMO, sums it all up in one nice little package, complete with a bow.. The statement is based upon the fact that this movie is an "interpretation", and nothing more.

Do people honestly NOT realize that if one were to take this type of outraged reaction and apply it to every film in which the plot/storyline is an amalgamation of one, or more, people's interpretation[s] of something/anything(fill in the blank with any subject you'd like, but for this movie that subject is related to Chumash).. If one were to apply this thought process to every other movie that's based upon another person's interpretation...well.. I believe it becomes quite apparent that we'd have the entire universe's entertainment industry wiped out in one fell swoop!

I realize that in this particular instance relating to the Chumash culture its likely to have been a new, or maybe even a never before felt sting that came with their seeing their own personal culture being displayed on the big screen, and not the way in which they personally know it to be, but rather much different, in it being another person's interpretation of certain Chumash customs .. Add to that, the fact that the interpretation that is being seen on the larger than life cinema is satirical in nature, and that it comes from a complete "outsider", who is NOT even Chumash..and well, again, the sting of anger and bitterness swells even greater.

Fact is that's just the way it goes, always has, and always will.. Different interpretations of one, single subject, are a dime a dozen, and vary widely up, down, and all around the entire spectrum.. Combine that with satire and parody, and the numerous ways spin wildly into infinity as to how many ways one's interpretation of a subject can, and do, differ.

These people are ridiculous. They act like they're still living in teepees, carving totems and hunting for meat, instead of what they actually are -- regular American citizens just like the rest of us, who drive cars, shop at grocery stores, use the internet, etc.

Instead, they give themselves absurd names like Howling Wolf or Iron Bear, pretend to be Indians, and whine like mingebags because someone made a movie about their "culture," which these days amounts to selling cheap cigarettes and opening casinos.

I'm Greek American and I didn't like the dumb way Spartans were portrayed in 300, but am I gonna get all bent out of shape about it and pretend that I'm a Spartan? Hell no. I'm a regular American citizen, not some jackwagon who holds onto stuff from centuries ago and whines about it.
