The House

Anyone have inside (factual) knowledge on the accuracy of the interior of Spector's house? IMHO, only a demented person would live in such a freak side-show kind of place.

I was just about to post about the house. How creepy. Creepy and depressing as hell. And that fake door to the left? Weird. Plain weird. And he kept going into room after room after room, and each room was more weirder and depressing than the one before it.

I specifically reminded her - bedside table! On the Kangaroo!

I think they explained it best at the end that it was a castle for a monster and that the barbed wire was to keep people from escaping as they sure as heck weren't trying to break in.

I've seen photos of the interior of the real "castle". It was hideously outdated and tacky. Not at all like in the movie. At least in the movie he had cool music memorabilia. The real castle was really tacky and old.

reply

The real castle was actually a lot worse. It was a tacky, almost bordello looking sleazy place. His "castle" sat on top of a hill in a unremarkable, mostly middle class predominantly Latino/Asian suburb called Alhambra. It was said that when Phil Spector was arrested for murder most in Hollywood weren't surprised, yet when they found out that he lived in Alhambra many were shocked.

reply

Alhambra's not a bad place, and it's not far from Hollywood. But it doesn't have the mystique or the communities where we expect the glitterati to reside. I'd expect to find someone like Spector in the Hollywood Hills; even if his finances were depleted, not everything there is out of reach. I'm sure there are posts explaining how he ended up in Alhambra; is there anything in particular anyone might point out?

Why was she even involved of any kind with him? Does she NEED drugs to deal, for some kind of gain?

I thought I read that he knew paparazzi would never bother following him to Alhambra, since no other celebs lived ANYWHERE nearby. I grew up just blocks away from The Castle (which was in use as an apartment building back in the 50s). It was walled off (but not gated) from the surrounding neighborhoods--and ideally spooky for Halloween trick-or-treating.

But oh man, was I shocked years later when I realized Phil Spector had been living there.....

You should really read Ronnie Spector's book Be My Baby. She tells a story that really predates this incident. The book was published until the 1990's- and she had finally left him in 1974- it took her 16 years to publish her story. Ronnie's story is that of horror. What he did to her and the children is criminal. But she talks about the house in the book and explains how creepy it was them. So forty years later I am sure it was worse. Remember he did not work much in the 70's and less in the 80's. All he really did was stay in his house. The house that he bought forty or so years before that did not have much around hit. Ronnie talks about the isolation and how she finally left was can only be imagined as a hostage escaping a kidnapper. Except he kidnapper was her husband of six years. Great book full of very good musical history, the 1960's development of sound and the survival of a talented woman help captive.

I don't know what happen the night Lana Clarkson died. There are questions, but typically the simplest answer is the correct one.

He moved into the castle exactly for those reasons. Well, number one was that he wanted to live in a real castle and that was the only one that his realtor could find in L.A. Number two was that it was extremely remote. As many of you have pointed out already, it is surrounded by huge walls and on top of a hill. Spector was a notorious recluse and didn't want to be bothered.

I can't bring myself to read Ronnie Spector's autobiography. The little I know about what her life with him was like is bad enough.

For those who are curious, here are some shots of the interior of the house:

I have no questions about who killed Lana Clarkson. It's pretty apparent to me.
