This isnt my feelings on the ending - I didnt see it. No - I didnt pussy out, I watched the damn abortion scene (jeez). For reasons too boring to go into, I missed the last 20 mins when it showed at the London Film Festival. As I might not see this film again - could someone spoil the ending for me (I keep reading its "Gut Wrenching"). Thanks.
shareHe follows the shop teacher home and smashes him in the head, trashes his apartment and steals his money, goes to the girl and gives her all of the money then has forced sex with her one last time, later intervenes on the girls receiving their passports, tears the girl's passport apart as the rest of the gang beats him, they torture him and smash him with a bottle, then some time later he ventures dazed back to the dorm and kills each of them (four of his former tribe brethren) by crushing their heads in with their individual end tables while they sleep (since they can't hear they don't awake to each murder). Then he walks down the hall, closes and locks the door to the hallway, and it ends. Absolutely brutal beyond belief.

shareWhile everything you wrote is true I have another interpretation of the end. After the other boys smashed his head with a bottle and left him face down in the flooded sink I find it hard to believe he would have survived. I think him killing the other four in the end is just a revenge fantasy that he plays out in his head as he drowns in the sink. It's possible that the girl saved him though. Could be either way.
shareI do not think the final scene leaves much room for interpretation. Given the brutally realistic depiction of various events throughout the whole movie (prostitution, rape, abortion, and various acts of violence), your first explanation in my opinion is extremely unlikely. Dare I say, it would be out of place. I can not offer any actual explanation of how he survived the drowning/beating. I can speculate, that he might have slipped down to the floor under his own weight and regained consciousness, or like you suggested the girl might have saved him (or someone else for that matter).
sharei had the exact same thoughts. Reason i felt was because of he scene outside the dorm before the mayhem started was with the snow fall seemed like a dream. also there was no scars or bleeding on his head where they had broken the bottle.
shareAlso, as he walked from room to room, his behavior was catatonic and almost robot like. Maybe an indication he was demonstrating an "out of body" experience or he was in a dreamlike state.
