How good are the sex scenes?

I've read they are quite long and graphic.

"Yeah, well, you know, that's just, like, your opinion, man."

reply

They're all done in one take, mainly in wide shots. They're are pretty realistic, though not very graphic (given the wide angle and the staging of the bodies)

Realistic- yes. Believable- not exactly.

So do you see the male and female private parts? Or just blurred / hidden angles/images?

reply

You see mainly breasts with the occasional flaccid penis and female pubic mound visible, no close ups. There are several simulated sexual positions including fellatio, doggy style, missionary, and 69, these are mostly shot from the side with the fully nude actors, but hips, arms, or the girl's hair obscure any actual sexual contact. As far as actual contact, you see brief kissing and very brief breast touching.

In the 69 scene, the girls hair does move away for a moment allowing full view of the supposed 69 but what is revealed is that the boys genitals are safely tucked out of the way between his thighs and the girl is sucking air. The sex scenes are poorly produced.

Satisfied with the answer?

Maybe you should download some porn while the grown-ups discuss cinematic art (which excludes The Tribe, by the way).

just porn alone is boring. some story would be nice....

The sex scenes strike me as having emotional verisimilitude but technical falseness. That is to say, the characters behave in a way that seems very much the way you'd expect a presumably somewhat sexually inexperienced boy, and a girl who's sexually experienced but at first isn't particularly accepting of the boy, to behave. On the other hand, the positions of the actors' genitals and mouths seem slightly wrong, making the simulated nature of the sex obvious; and in the first sexual encounter, the boy's non-tumescence, and the girl's supposedly having to manually stimulate him to get him erect, are just absurd. What healthy hetero teenage boy is going to be flaccid in such a situation? (For that matter, how did they get actor Grigoriy Fesenko to be flaccid for the scene? Did they give him some sort of drug? Is he gay?)

Frankly, I think that, in order to have both emotional and technical verisimilitude, director Miroslav Slaboshpitsky either should've had his actors have actual sex--maybe not showing the boy's erect penis--or should've shot the scenes in a less explicit manner in which inaccurate body positions wouldn't have been noticeable.

One that is camera-shy? Or just squeezed one out? Or, as you mention, could have been drunk/high? Probably the first one. "Performing" on-camera is notoriously difficult.

@gds555

You spoil a good post with inane questions and remarks about the young actor's flaccidity. Many actors say it s hard to do sex scenes so why would it not be hard for the boy?

And yeah, the sex scenes were definitely unerotic as hell---I think that was done on purpose/by design, and certainly the most unglamorous-looking ones too. But that is typical of some European films I've seen.

I didn't find this to be so. They are unsexy but there is a rawness to them that appeals to me. They are the opposite of synthetic sex scenes as are popular with lots of mainstream (mostly American) films. In those scenes there are no noises or dirtiness. The sex scenes in Plemya were like the characters and reminded me of the sex scenes in Bruno Dumont's La Vie de Jesus and L'humanitie.

Poppy Transfusion: I assume that when you say I "spoil[ed] a good post", you mean I spoiled my own post.

Regarding the often-mentioned alleged difficulties of doing sex scenes: Those difficulties are of several kinds, not just erectile; and it's my impression that for most male actors, at least the ones in their twenties and thirties, the most frequent erectile difficulty is avoiding an erection, not having one on cue. You occasionally hear about an actor's penis having to be taped to his leg or abdomen during the filming of a sex scene, so that it won't be pointing and prodding and probing where it shouldn't. Furthermore, since it's so rare for an actor to be required to have an erection on camera, how would most actors even know how difficult or non-difficult doing that might be?

In the case of Plemya, I seriously doubt that the boy's flaccidity was the result of any insuperable erectile difficulties on the part of actor Grigoriy Fesenko, particularly since if director Myroslav Slaboshpytskyi had wanted Fesenko to have an on-camera erection and Fesenko had somehow found it difficult, he could simply have taken Viagra or whatever.

I repeat my contention that showing a teenage boy as being flaccid at such a moment of incipient coition, particularly with such a fetching partner as the character portrayed by actress Yana Novikova, is pretty unrealistic. I assume, though, that director Slaboshpytskyi chose such a depiction because he felt that the tumescent alternative would just be too taboo-violating; and I suspect that it took some special effort--mental, pharmaceutical, or otherwise--for Fesenko to stay flaccid during the filming of that scene.

Yes I did.

Thanks for your reply. That makes better sense of your contention, which I appreciate more. I remain sceptical about how easy it would be for the young man to achieve and maintain an erection because of the situation. I agree that the director may not have wanted to film an erection because of the difficulties this may have caused with ratings, distribution etc.

They are graphic in their nudity and... positions? But totally unerotic, dispassionate, literally cold, and unstimulating. As it should be.

So good that I wanked the whole 1 hour 57 minutes. My friend next to me kept going past the credits.
