Spoiler alert

He could have saved her. He could get that man down without cutting the rope, he instead sould have decapitated that guy so he would fall down and the girl would have stayed there.

Good movie except for that part.

I was thinking the same thing, that he could have gotten him down without her getting caught in it. And I don't understand why he killed himself and left his mom all alone. I loved the movie, but was a little disappointed with that part.

Yeah, very depressing.

reply

yeah, at first, I thought he (spoiler alerts) hung himself just so that he could see Amanda again by dying, but as the scene went on, I was deducing that killing himself wouldn't enable him to do that. Poor guy, but his poor mom too.

reply

It would've took him too much time to do that while she was seconds away from being raped by her brother(the old creepy version). Plus she asked him to do it if he loved her.

reply

Absolutely right OP. I was thinking the same thing. Why not take the extra moments to just cut him down? Very unsatisfactory explanation for that one.

reply

Did you boobs not see where Amanda was about to be raped? Eli didn't have time to hack through her brothers body and only cut him down. There was only time to cut the rope as Amanda was pleading for Eli to do.

reply

My thought is better to be partially raped but alive rather than dead.

reply

She'd rather be dead than to be raped by her brother, even "partially raped."

reply

And by partially raped I mean raped...but alive!

reply

She wasn't alive then either.

reply

Well not alive, but you know..."alive".

reply

I didn't think about that, but I see your reasoning. Like a couple others have said, she was pleading him to just kill her.

But now that you mention, I would've done the same thing as you pointed out. To hell with what she pleaded lol

reply

I agree. In fact the entire "logic" of a hanging corpse not being dead until the rope is cut didn't sit well with me. I thought Amanda was a ghost because of the wrongful circumstances of her death, not because she was still hanging from the tree.

Eli hanging himself at the end didn't make sense to me either. It would have made more sense if he was in love with Amanda (as he seemed to be) and wanted to be with her forever. But since he couldn't join her, it made no sense for him to kill himself. He could have "protected" his mother much better alive than dead. A ghost can't work the farm, or pay bills!

Despite a weak script at the end, I enjoyed this movie. The ending could have been a bit more satisfying, but the journey there was atmospheric and well done! Recommended.
