Problems with the plot - SPOILER ALERT

I have a big problem with this movie's plot - it makes no sense. If I'm to believe the premise, Donovan is having these premonitions so he can save little Maggie. This is important because she ultimately goes on to continue Donovan's work in Cold Fusion; for the good of all the world, of course. How ridiculous!

Okay, let's say by some stretch of the imagination I'm able to buy into that premise. There's still a problem. It would mean even the death of Donovan's family would factor into that grand scheme. Also, as far as I can tell, some of his premonitions have no relevance in saving Maggie; and the others, well, Donovan's own actions set them into motion, at least the pivotal ones at the end of the movie. It's all very illogical and extremely far-fetched to me.
