clothing on the show

anyone else feel like the clothing on this show is not that impressive (especially jane) i guarentee you any fashion student, or anyone working in fashion would not be caught dead in 87% of the clothes on this show!

reply

Well everyone has their own style so I wouldn't say that because they obviously have stylists or whatever they're called for the show and they pick out the clothes.

reply

God, i threat were i belong. I'm a fashion student. I don't consider the clothes ugly. But too safe. Some of them are really hideous, i really like the way they dress India she is to me the most fashion forward. But jane is great sometimes, but other times really boring.

reply

i agree india is the most fashion forward for sure.

reply

Well, I disagree. I do prefer India's style, but of course she's older. It would make no sense if Jane went to school dress as sexy as India. And actually I have two friends who are fashion designers and I bet at least one of them would quite relate to Jane's style. Obviously she has her own style, but yes, I can see her wearing SOME of the stuff Jane wears. Usually fashion designers do tend to wear things that are next season's trends and do risk wearing some edgier stuff, but Jane IS supossed to be new in the fashion business.

reply

I think that's the point as far as Jane goes; she is suppose to be new to the world of fashion. A lot of times her fashion to me seems very high school (big necklaces, belts and very matchy matchy most of the time).

However, you can tell she has an eye for it and is willing to take risks. I think her style will only get better with age.

reply

It's not awful, I just hate all the puffy skirts she wears. Those are not very fashion forward.

reply

They're probably not exactly fashion forward, but the tutu skirts are now for some reason pretty popular among high school girls, who this show is aimed at.

reply

Really? What type of high school do you go to? I've only seen people wear these skirts in Middle School. Nowadays I believe high schoolers are dressing up even nicer than ever before.

What I also don't understand is why she has to wear a skirt in nearly EVERY episode. It's almost a relieve to see her wear pants or anything that isn't a skirt or puffy.

Maybe you're confused with 50's circle skirts. I think whoever is in charge of the actual fashion of this show tried really hard but failed. What's in-everywhere, regardless of high school or not is vintage, 50's style circle skirts, midi skirts, and maxi skirts. They're trying to make Jane be a hipster girl but instead they got someone who is a really poorly dressed wannabe hipster.

reply

Coming from a Parson's Fashion student- I completely agree. Retro/ Vintage is a strong trend in fashion. This show does not understand that. The makers of this show do not understand fashion.
The one episode that bothered me the most was the press show/ high school dance. I don't understand why Jane turned that pink vintage ruffled prom gown(which was decent) into another cheap tutu skirt. The dress looked better before she changed it. Also the situation was unbelievable. She obviously could have worn a little black dress. The students were not dressy. That episode made Jane appear even more dumb and lacking in style.
The styling of the whole show is too Forever 21. That fashion show was hideous, and not cohesive at all. Their label is not high end and the whole studio is ridiculously overly glamorized. Nothing makes sense and everything is nonsense. Obviously, not realistic. Definitely not on the same level as Devil Wears Prada, and even that film was safe(especially for Patricia Field.) Also, they tried too hard to make Jane look like Anne Hathaway...

reply

Some of them are absolute eyesores. I find it hard to believe that anyone with a halfway-decent reputation in the fashion industry would be taken seriously wearing the things that Jane (and Andie McDowell's character) wears, "creates", etc. I don't mean to be cruel, I mean, some of them could be considered cute [if you were nine years old] but really... I couldn't even imagine those things being Last Call Wet Seal, let alone couture.

reply

I really like Billy's clothes, they seem rather well thought out, especially the leather jacket from the latest episode. I also love India's clothes. But Jane's...yeah they leave a bit to be desired.

reply

yeah sometimes I feel that girls from pretty little liars dress better then jane.

reply

If you wanna look for nice fashion you are best to go watch The CW shows. They actually get great designers none of this Forever 21 sh*t.

But in saying that this show is targeted towards younger people so dressing the characters in things they can afford seems logical. I like Gossip Girl fashion but the clothes are out of the price range for a lot of the teens that watch the show.

reply

The problem isn't "looking for" nice fashion but expecting it in a show about fashion. It's just takes away from the believability of the story when you see what people are wearing on this show.

reply

Yeah but its also a show about a teenage girl in high school. A teenage girl wearing a Chanel dress would just be impossible. Unless she was ridiculously rich which Jane is not.

reply

Hahaha, as IF wearing a "Chanel" dress means anything about being fashionable. You clearly don't know anything about fashion. That's fine, I understand now who this show is geared towards-clearly not people who are into fashion.

reply

Yeah I agree. She doesn't have to wear high end designer brands to look stylish..it's just her outfits look so amateur. I've seen people working at Forever 21/Urban Outfitters look so much better than Jane does. And why does she ALWAYS wear those waist high puffy skirts..does she not have anything else in her closet??

And I TOTALLY agree with the person who said The CW shows have better clothes. I stopped watching Gossip Girl after the first season but that show had amazing clothes and NOT all of the characters were wealthy in that show and they still had great fashion sense so I don't know what this shows excuse is...

reply

A show about fashion is not very realistic for people who are in the fashion industry, so what? virtually all cop shows are in no way realistic to cops. Medical shows are in no way realistic to doctors. Spy shows are not realistic to people in the know. It's the way of hollywood.

reply

Think about how a medical show would look like if the doctors are not shown wearing gloves in the ER, or how a cop show would look like if the cops don't have guns. Having good clothes on a show whose premise is based on a very fashionable girl but she isn't actually shown to be fashionable IS valid criticism. It makes viewers go WTF and it is also misleading!

reply

I'm a fashion major, and I couldn't make it through the first episode. The entire show was just too inaccurate as a portrayal of the fashion industry. The clothes were bad. Not at all fashion forward. They should have gone in a Gossip Girl, or Ugly Betty direction. Those were brilliant with their styling. Jane by Design is dated in its costumes, and completely inaccurate. I'm not saying the shows above were, but they could have put even the slightest bit of effort into the realism of the show. It's like it was made for middle schoolers who have this "barbie-ized" version of the fashion industry.
