They should put a gay character ASAP!

I'm a fashion design student, and there's something that really bores me in this show. They don't have a strong gay character. I think the black guy is supposed to be gay. But come on guys really?. In my generation we are 50 girls and 8 boys... all of them gay, they need to put a gay guy who work in Donovan Decker, i mean the industry is no the same whitout them. Besides it woudl be really cool to see that, and the network had done that before and it works, Emily in PLL is gay and is a really good plot in the show.

At first i though that the blonde guy who is a fashion designer was gay, but not. And there was a guy in the pilot that was gay but he dissapeared.

What do you guys think?

reply

i enjoy that he's not a stereotype.

The black guy is gay. Sorry he's not gay enough for you but it's so refreshing that he's not an absolute cliche.

Reality is a lovely place, but I wouldn't want to live there.

reply

I’m not talking about a cliché like Kurt on Glee, but someone who is more important in the development of the plot.

reply

Or they could just focus on the characters they have now.

I'd be fine with less focus on the fashion industry.

I stated earlier this week I want more Carter on the show. I think it is great that he isn't flamboyant. I think it's a fine line the writers are trying to stradle. They don't want to get blasted for not including a gay man when there are many in the fashion industry, but they can't make him Kurt Hummel(thank you previous poster for getting this) gay without getting people riled up about the stereotypes cast on gay males in fashion.

I like you. When the world is mine, your death shall be quick and painless. -Stewie

reply

Carter, that's the name. Yeah it would be awesome if he could be more than just another guy "working", i think it would be great if he get promoted to the work India used to have.

reply

They neither 'should' or 'need' to include a gay character. I don't see the point.

There's only one party worse than this: the Donner party-and they had better food!

reply

To make it realistic.

reply

How is it not already realistic? I hate it when bleeding heart liberals keep trying to insert diversity for the sake of diversity. It's so obnoxious.

reply

The show is not entire realistic about the fashion company, and the show is about fashion, after all is Jane by Desing. I don’t know if you know this but in the world of fashion gay men are really important. If you work in a place where they work with fashion no matter if is retail, haute couture, fashion production, magazines, etc. You are going to find a gay man. Actually is more probable that you find a gay man than straight men. It sound weird but that’s reality… I know this because I’m a fashion design student, and I did internship before, so I know who the world of fashion is.

reply

There already is a gay character, there is no logical reason to make a gay character prominent on the show and I don't see why homosexuals at all are important to the fashion industry

You're being obtuse

reply

No. Your argument simply makes no sense.

You might want to read the names of people you're replying to, we're not all the same person.

I have no previous argument with you, stating your being obtuse when you clearly are being obtuse isn't an argument.

reply

Sorry. I was reading too fast. But how am I being obtuse?

Jeremy is gay enough for the whole show.

I'm A Killah Don't Push Me!

reply

Jeremy is NOT gay (he's had a lot of sex w/India and is also attracted to Jane) - he's more metro-sexual - great dresser w/a sense of fantastic fashion, he's also a fantastic fashion designer; he doesn't have to be gay to be talented.

Carter is gay - who I like a lot; I wouldn't care if the writers gave him a bigger role, but I also wouldn't care if they left his role as it is..

The show's concept Jane By Design is about a high-school girl working in the designing business w/o getting caught. I love this show and ALL of the characters, w/the exception of India (but hell we need a bad girl on the show, the actress does a wicked job)..Billy is my fave - he's so HOT !

Agreed

Keep on getting stuck up in the same old scene
Baby, why'd you have to go and be so mean?

reply

To be honest Jeremy should be gay, seriously there are no straight male designers who design womens clothing. Plus they decided to make him a "ladies man" which is so laughable. They could of made Billy gay instead.

reply

Okay name one male designer who is straight? He also can only design womenswear. Its not ignorant its just fact.

reply

Well it's not diversity for the sake of diversity. It's diversity for the sake of reality. And it's not a bleeding-heart-liberal thing to talk about things like this. Conservatives complain whenever they see representations that either paint conservatives badly or lack conservative people (hence the perpetuation of the idea of a liberally biased media) or attempt to normalize behavior they disapprove of.

And homosexuals are important to the fashion industry. It's like in Amelie, where there weren't any minority characters even in the streets. It wasn't a realistic depiction of France.

I agree that I don't want a token gay character or to have one unnaturally inserted into the show to make certain people happy, but there is plenty logical reason for it. Gay people are very prominent in the fashion industry.

But I agree that the OP hasn't articulated their reason very well. The show doesn't need to put any character in ASAP; all writing should be organic and characters should develop naturally. What they're talking about is the type of argument that justifies token characters. No one should be happy with a token minority.

reply

I never noticed that about Amelie! Good eye!

For straight designers, Ozwald Boateng, for one. He loves da laydeez.

reply

"diversity for the sake of diversity"?

Man I bet you really hate Star Trek. Silly Gene Roddenberry inserting random races just cos he could, like some kinda crazy Benetton ad in space...tisk tisk.

As for the fashion industry, not having a gay character would be like having a hospital show where all the nurses are male......just weird.

If anything, the showrunners are "cheating" by conforming to your sensitive tastes, getting credit having a character who's *wink wink* gay without being flaming, so's not to inflame the loins of the right wing "white is right/gay's not ok" parade.

reply

You're just being pathetically paranoid.

If the writers decide to insert a gay character, they'll do it at their own time and will be a logical inclusion.

Funny post! But do they really 'need' gay - and gayER characters?
Most cops have never shot their gun on the job. Should fewer cops be shooting guns on TV? Most astronauts have never attained warp speed or veered outside Federation territory.
This is a show for teens. I feel so many shows force the issue of gays and interracial dating. Not that I care about either issue, but it just seems forced.
I've lived in the gayest zip code in the country. As a straight, it was uncomfortable. NO ONE likes to live as a minority.
(and yeah, I'm old. I realize gays and B+W couples are more the norm these days, and it's not something I'm against at all)

reply

I don't think it's uncomfortable unless one thinks that way. I've been the only minority in SO many places and situations, but it doesn't matter to me. I'm the only minority in my place of work (a magazine), where it's all white people, but it doesn't phase me and I don't mind at all. With interracial dating, I don't think it's forced unless you look at it that way. To me, it just comes naturally especially if the actors are good enough. For example, Rita and Ben, Lulu and Billy, and even Jeremy and India. It looks normal to me.

reply

You need to stop being stereotypical, ASAP!

Sometimes, I wish I was a ho.

reply

We dont get to meet many people from donovan decker on the show. Lets see there is gray india jeremy and carter and now not even india so gays arent exactly under represented. i feel like now a days gay men are represented enough on tv where it shouldnt have to be forced. I mean I wouldnt mind another gay character if it came up naturally.

Denny's is for winners- Jeff Winger

reply

Why would you think Jeremy was gay? He was a womanizing character from the start.

I think it's important not to do things solely to please a fan base. Then a character would just be a token minority. The show doesn't need to do anything ASAP and just watching the show for gay characters, waiting for them to show up, isn't substantive. I would be fine if they added a gay character, but I'd rather they take their time and make sure they have something new to say or do with them.
