If the "your" refers to Jack, then the film should really be called "Your sister-in-law's half sister." Then that would be a bit too long and confusing, but more accurate. Borrowing from a Woody Allen film, perhaps it should have been called "Hannah and her sister Iris" without the "s" on sister.

I thought the title of the movie was strange as well. Maybe it was a play of words but not sure what it's suppose to mean.

Is it not just to signify that Jack has a complicated relationship with Iris both as his friend and as her sister Hannah's sister?

Or did I just completely miss the sarcasm there?

Ok. I saw an early cut of this film and the title was used in the penultimate scene. Remember when Jack comes back and addresses the sisters and he speaks to them both?

As he is wrapping it up he says something like "Because, you (signaling Hannah) might be carrying my baby" Then turning his attention to Iris, says "and you - I'm in love with your sister's sister"

When it was available on DVD, I told my mom that the title is used in the end and she said it wasn't
So, we watched the ending again and it totally is not the same as when I saw it. But, bigger question is: Why would they change that? It plays so much better when he says it that way than just,
"Because you - might be having my baby, and I'm in love with your sister."

Interesting. So basically when he says "your sister's sister, he's talking to Iris about Iris? As in your sister - Hannah's - sister - you? Wow, that's confusing. I get why they changed it.

So the title Your Sister's Sister is just the movie's long version of saying "Iris". But I suppose it could also refer to what queen_of_the_troubled_teen said -

- which is what I took it to mean. Regardless, the title has confounded me ever since I first saw it on IMDb, and catches my attention every time I see it on the "similar titles" list, which is why I finally decided to watch it today. So it has its merits, haha.

The title is kind of referenced when Jack is toasting on that first drunk night and says, "To your sister...and *her* sister."

oh lol your so right. I totally forgot that line.
Thanks alot it makes alot more sense now. I was starting to feel dumb because I couldn't make sense of it.

When two girls are friends with each other, they are sometimes called "sisters". In the móvie Jack and Iris are like "sisters" to each other (friends). I understand the title as "My friend(refering to Iris) sister(Hannah)".

It's a play on of words to refer to them as a diagram. "Your Sister's Sister" is saying (Iris' sister Hannah, to her sister Iris), referring to the triangle in which Jack is in dilemma between the two sisters. It's really not that hard to understand people. =/
