Forgettable.

"I waited patiently through the first half- hour or so of the movie, hoping it would start getting interesting - soon! Please! When is somebody going to say or do something that takes my attention and makes me think? Or care?

It is about a bunch of young, rich, smug, self-indulgent, middle- class people (I used a different word to describe them) sitting around talking, having sexual intercourse (again I used a different word for this activity), analysing themselves and each other ...

Sorry. I just didn't care about any of it. So I got up and left. This film was just a) boring and b) irritating. Don't waste your time or money on it."

Just wanted to say this review is so very right.

The movie was empty and pseudo-intellectual. Meaningless and forgettable as well, the fairly high rating just means that people's standards have come way down.

Everybody ofcourse is entitled to their own opinion but, first of all, they were not rich (he especially), not especially young. More importantly, it doesn't matter, it's about family and romantic love. The sex is only a minor part of the movie and really not important at all (the act that is), so why people focus on that part that much is beyond me.

I would agree with the forgettable description - the word that sprang to mind for me was "lame".

The ubiquitous Emily Blunt's performance was pretty diabolical. Alongside Anne Hathaway who also became a star on the back of the Devil Wears Prada, I just don't understand why Ms Blunt is turning up in everything at the moment - she must have a really good agent or something. At best an average actress. She clearly couldn't decide whether to retain her posh English accent or to adopt an American one and thus ended up meandering back and forth between the two accents for the entire 90 minutes of the movie.

Simply wow. Emily Blunt is certainly one of the better actresses working today and her character was clearly British in the movie. This movie had flaws, but the acting of Blunt and Dewitt were not among them.

I read an article about Emily Blunt's accent recently. I genuinely believe her British accent is deteriorating because she's in so many American films and has an American husband. The article provided some video clips for proof, and it's really clear that her American accent has gotten better and better and her British one worse and worse. The accent jumping is not her fault - I think she's simply losing her natural accent. It's rather sad.

Ditto on everything you've said. I'm not going to lie, Blunt can be a little hit and miss sometimes, but after seeing her in both Edge of Tomorrow and this movie today, I can definitely say she's a really solid actress when she's given the right material.

You know who's really overrated? Zoe Saldana. She's truly an average actress at best. And yet she's in Avatar, Star Trek, The Losers, Guardians of the Galaxy, etc. F@ck off. She really doesn't deserve to be in some of the world's biggest movies/any potential franchises. She must have the best agent in Hollywood.

You heart me? What is that? Is that like I love you for pussies?

reply

I'm very bummed but I agree. I was expecting this one with impatience because I love Blunt and DeWitt and I like intimate indies but this is just... like a documentary with no commentary. No character, no connection, no plot to speak of, no journey or growth. Nothingness.

I can't believe they got such great reviews.

I also thought this was pretty poor.
I did half-enjoy the first 40 minutes or so until the "showdown" but then it just got overly meoldramatic, cheesy and, well, just dull.

Well just because it's a movie about people talking doesn't mean it is attempting to be intellectual or 'pseudo-intellectual' as you put. I think you completely missed the point if you felt that was one of the goals of the movie. It is all about emotions and emotional truth. As we all know there is often little intellect involved in feeling. I felt this movie got to the emotional heart of these characters and this story really well. There are some scenes which rang so true without beating you over the head via melodrama such as the scene with the two sisters talking in bed. It was written so genuinely yet retained the subtlety of real life people who often withhold some information and emotions. The two sisters gave standout performances and truly sold the material which helped elevate it. Duplass wasn't asked to do much so he was fine in his role but he couldn't keep up with the two women. All in all this movie touched on these familial emotional issues in a more honest way than I've seen in a while. I have a hard time accepting how the script glossed over the stolen sperm but the rest of the movie was so well done I'd easily recommend it friends.

It seemed to me that throughout the movie, the actors were doing an improv of their lines. Almost as if they were given an outline and they were coming up with the words on the fly. I liked that in a weird way.

From the moment Iris shows up at the house, I'm turned off by the movie. It was working exceptionally well for me up until that moment.

Duplass was a horrible choice for Jack. T.R. Knight should have been Jack.

To the OP, my thoughts exactly. I'm glad I'm not the only one noticing a pattern with certain types of movies and am bored/unexcited by it.

reply

This is so bad it isn't forgettable.

Emotional truth? This was an extremely simple plot.
The lesbian sister screws the dufus to get knocked up.
The other sister thinks she is in love with the dufus.
The dufus wants to keep the sex a secret until he finds the rubber with all the holes.
They all forgive each other and live together stupidly ever after.

This movie had the emotional depth of a birdbath.

Welcome to the world of hipster screenwriting and directing. It's, uh, complex yet oh so rewarding. Yay for exploring the human condition while creating art and culture ... yay.

I disagree, this is far from forgettable. I loved it and ever more so after a second viewing.

solid Dramedy IMO.
