I can't bring myself to see this movie....

I walked out of My Effortless Brilliance (there's 45 minutes of my life I'll never get back...I could have been cleaning toilets which would have been far more rewarding), and I didn't understand the hoopla surrounding Humpday, as it had potential, but fell absolutely FLAT. It really wasn't funny at all.

First time, shame on Lynn, second time, shame on me. I can't bring myself to reach a third time. This is one overhyped screenwriter/director.

...and would someone please tell Mark Duplass that he really needs to find a new line of work.

reply

I can't bring my self to accept the implausibility that these two women would fall for a f6cking shiftless loser. And what is even worse is that the trailer actually presents it as a charming dilemma, when actually it is just pseudo-existential drivel about...what exactly? From the looks of it, this guy could never make either of those women or himself happy, even in the short term. What is it about him exactly that they find so damned irresistible?

Mind you, I've only seen the trailer, but it looks to be in the same vein as Wonderful World as Mathew Broderick. Not in a romantic sense, but in the sense that Broderick's character is a self loathing son of a b!tch who ruins a very good thing with his f6cking up. However, at least in that movie he realizes this and learns his lesson, albeit too late.

This movie is so not a tale of modern social merit.

The trailer only tells you a little bit. There's a huge key to the plot left out that is awesome because if it was shown in the trailer it would ruin the whole movie.

reply

True, not sure it should have been left out of the trailer as I think it would entice more to see it, but yes, it does make the triangle far more interesting.

From the trailer I get the impression that Blunt's character has 'Friend Zoned' her male buddy and once he spends an evening of passion with her sister she starts getting worried that her shoulder to cry on, go to listener will no longer be at her beck and call.

I'd really like to see this flick, but I do hope he tells them both where to stick it.
.....or....Threesome!

Just kidding....or am I?

Shame on you Kiramischka. Don't judge a movie you haven't seen. That's supremely unfair. The only way you know a film will suck without seeing it, is if it stars Adam Sandler or Will Ferrell.

reply

If people went by that then they would miss gems like 'Stranger than Fiction' or 'Reign over Me'

reply

I agree with "Stranger than Fiction". "Reign over Me", however, is poorly acted fake melodrama, much like August Rush.

reply

add Nicholas Cage to that, Ridiculous Cage

reply

add Nicholas Cage to that

Nicolas Cage was in "Rumblefish", "Adaptation", "Wild at Heart" and "Raising Arizona".

Miss those if you like but you'd be missing some of the best films made in America, period.

"Drive Angry" was pretty ******* cool as well, in my humble.

I used to want to change the world. Now I just want to leave the room with a little dignity.

reply

Or Moonstruck. That was really Cage at his most gorgeous.

Both sisters don't "fall for" Jack. Only Iris does. She has been friends with him for years. He used to have his sh!t together, but has been depressed since his brother died, which is very understandable (his brother is his only sibling and they were close). At the beginning of the film, Iris points out that Jack has been different since his brother died and she misses the way he used to be. She sends him off to her father's secluded cabin so he can have some alone time and straighten himself out. When he arrives, he finds her sister Hannah there. She is depressed about the end of an unstable seven-year relationship. Jack and Hannah get drunk and decide to have sex. Neither of them has any romantic feelings for the other and they both regret their drunken tryst. Jack is in love with Iris and Iris is in love with Jack, but she used to date his brother so they're both afraid it will be awkward if they expose their feelings.

reply

It's not like they both fall for him at first sight. Iris (Emily Blunt's character) is secretly in love with him, but they've been friends for a long time. Even though he's depressed and doesn't have his sh!t together, he and Iris have a comfortable, easy rapport and they make each other laugh. She also remembers what he was like before his brother died and he became depressed. I can see how her character could have fallen for him over time. Hannah (Rosemarie Dewitt's character) doesn't even fall for him. She just gets drunk with him and then they have a one night stand.

reply

for a guy to be totally screwed up and yet still land those two chicks in the film Blunt and DeWitt he would have to be extremely good looking and charismatic, neither of those qualities describe Duplass.

On top of that this film was mostly improvised, okay thats code for this film will suck, if i ever hear a film was shot without a script i try to avoid it, just at the very least type up a minimalist basic 40 page script so that you can prevent the film from becoming horrid.

reply

Mark Duplass is EXTREMELY charismatic and is actually pretty attractive. He's just not your average over the top ridiculously good looking actor that Hollywood shoves down our throats. I think he has a very refreshing face and personality.
Plus he makes quality films. This film in particular has his best dramatic acting to date. The film is also very funny. I say don't miss it people! (I also hated My Effortless Brilliance)

reply

Did you even see the movie? It doesn't sound like you did.

I personally liked Duplass but I have a propensity for cute, somewhat nerdy guys. And since his character is unhinged by his brother's death, I take it that Iris - Emily Blunt's character - knew enough of him and his true nature before he got messed up and directionless.

My problem with the movie was the lack of the two people talking about the brother. It seemed more like a convenient framing device and then....poof!

once again people judging and predicting what a movie is like from the trailer.

someone already let storied cat out of bag, but to further explain that both of these women don't fall for the man.

one woman was the girlfriend/wife (not sure) of the man's dead brother. they are good friends, because both share the "love" of the dead brother. (it's been a year since the brother died)

the other woman is lesbian, and just got out of a 7 year relationship, but wants to have a baby.

the man and the lesbian got drunk and she talked him into the sack, where she had sabotaged the condom.

the other sister shows up at the cabin unexpectedly, and reveals to her sister that she thinks she loves the man. The lesbian sister did not know that her sister was falling for the man.

pretty unconventional situation, but there is some forgiveness between the three, and they all wait to find out if the lesbian is pregnant.

I'm not trying to convince anyone to go pay to see this, but it's not what you think...and I just get annoyed when people judge a movie without seeing it.

It's not typical model dude with a six pack going after a super hottie with fake boobs...although the ladies in this film were attractive..they are not the typical rom-com types.

reply

I walked out of this movie. Luckily my local cinema refunds your money if you really hate the film (which I did). Boring, self-indulgent, tedious, pointless - I couldn't find a single redeeming feature in it. A complete waste of my time.

This is perhaps the thing about the film that's most brilliant.

I completely expected the movie to be about the dead brother back story and Jack's attempts to deal with it, and get over it. I am delighted any time a movie does something that I didn't expect.

And the reason why the movie doesn't go there is really clear: because Jack is immediately confronted with life. Which he has been avoiding for a year. The movie unexpectedly becomes about this very odd situation he has found himself in. And that's because it's about Jack's life, and that's what's happened to it: it is suddenly no longer about the dead brother at all.

Prepare your minds for a new scale of physical, scientific values, gentlemen.

the film was shot with a 70 page script. Do some research (or maybe even see the goddamn movie) before making claims like that.

I thought he had charisma and personally I like a man on the larger, nonperfect side. Cuddly and slightly rumpled. They seem more real and sexy to me than buffed up, macho, every hair in place perfect looking men. I didn't see him as a loser either, just someone still dealing with grief from the loss of a loved one. I liked all three main characters in this, especially him.

Trust your instincts. They are leading you in the right direction. Although the acting is terrific.

Humpday wasn't written to be funny. It's a character study and of course, some funny stuff comes out of it but I think you missed the point. Lynn, please keep making more movies. There are haters out there but don't listen to them. Your movies are so refreshing, fun and entertaining to me. And Duplass, if you ever stop acting, that will be a sad day. You're charming, natural and fun to watch... 99% of the leading men out there are not.

reply

It was actually very good, and entertaining. You seem to be making an awfully big deal out of your decision not to watch the movie.

reply

I saw it & I will say this: Trust your instincts.

Point of order: the lesbian didn't fall for him, he was just her sperm donor.

reply

Are you kidding? ... Duplass is da bomb!!!!!

He is a type, I will give you that ... but a rather rare type. I have met that man once before. They're, how do you say it ... there's a word for it, but let's just say stealth heart stealers. Their charm lies in their humility ... they don't really expect much, but also their optimism ... they will go after an opportunity if it does present itself. But because they don't expect much they can also walk away if need be. Nothing turns people on more than someone who is willing to sacrifice his or her happiness on principle ... which is no big stretch when you think about it because happiness is not worth it if there is corruption at its core.
