Mark Duplass Ruined The Movie

I wasn't expecting much as it's just a small indie movie and I only watched it because Ms. Blunt is in it. but I cant stand guys in movies with ratty, knotty hair. Or hair you wish you could run a brush through. He just looked like a slob and unappealing. Hard to believe that my gorgeous Emily or hottie Rosiemarie would be able to stomach the guy, let alone find him somewhat attractive. I realize Dewitt didn't do what she did based on his looks, but watching the scenes is hard because you're like ugh.

On a side note in case Mark reads this.. Im not calling the guy ugly. Im sure if he combed his hair and shaved he'd be decent looking, but had you used a guy that didnt just look like he woke up after binge drinking, the movie would at least been aesthetically pleasing, if not enjoyable as a film. They should have cast John Krasinski... lol It probably would have turned out good.

I <3 Emily Blunt

You have to understand his character is a total mess still grieving over his brother's death. Those kinds of people aren't generally preoccupied about their physical appearance.

The story required an easily manipulated nice-guy/sap. I think he was a fine choice.

reply

I have to disagree with you. I think he was really good in this, and very good-looking as well.

Not everyone in real life looks like a movie star. Grow up.

reply

Not everyone looks like a dirty slob either.

Viewing these characters and this film in a superficial way, I couldn't agree more!

But, viewing it with a bit more depth, well, that's where the treasure is.

I would put it this way. This was the first time I've taken note of a Mark Duplass performance. What I came to the boards here just now to say, (but saw your post, so wrote this), is that I think I've just seen the most glowing and honorable portrayal of mature, caring, manhood.

Without the emotional trauma tearing him up, he wouldn't have had the epiphany; he wouldn't have broken free of his "stuff." I think that humility comes from that kind of emotional challenge and that's the first step in feeling empathy and compassion. Hygiene in the woods, while biking. The sheer exhaustion of the grieving alone... His appearance is dwarfed in the face of all else he is experiencing.

Perhaps the fact the women had both suffered loss, too, gave them the understanding to support and care for him.

You can give any guy a suit, a day at the spa, give him a status watch and a toy car... but you know what isn't so easy to put together? Heart, honor and character, even in an average, flawed, but honest man.

Well said!

You thought Mark Duplass has ratty, knotty hair? Jesus...wait until you see truly despicable hair, like Russell Brand's, or anyone with dreadlocks.

You heart me? What is that? Is that like I love you for pussies?

reply

This may be a bit far-fetched but perhaps Iris isn't as shallow deep down and loved him for who he was?

Jack joked about her usual type and how her relationships to those types would never last longer than a couple of week. Perhaps she needed something more from a partner than just good looks?

I like a man who is more on the large, slightly flawed and rumpled side. To me they are sexier than the buffed up perfect male. I am not talking absolute slob, just a little flawed, rumpled, and a little on the large side. Plus he was getting over the death of his brother, so he was a little more messed up than he normally might have been.

When you get up in the morning, how do you decide what shade of black to wear? (Shallow Grave)

reply

Aw!! He's the only reason I watched it. I do love Emily Blunt too tho.
