Olivia William's accent

Why did they have to do that? Her normal British accent sounds fantastic, why make her have a weird sounding American one? I never like it when they do that like Rachel Weisz in Bourne Legacy. I realize in Sabotage they might want an all-American sounding cast, but is it so unbelievable for a British woman to be working in American law enforcement?

She was playing an American.

Her normal British accent sounds fantastic...

That's a stupid reason to make a professional actor not change their accent.

...Why make her have a weird sounding American one?

Weird sounding? The film was set in the southeastern U.S.

We I never like it when they do that like Rachel Weisz in Bourne Legacy.

People cared over something so trivial?

I realize in Sabotage they might want an all-American sounding cast, but is it so unbelievable for a British woman to be working in American law enforcement?

Yes. Very unbelievable.

Why contrive a reason for a foreign actor to keep their accent when they could just do their job well, as Olivia Williams did, and PLAY an American?

It's bad enough that Brits and Aussies are flooding Hollywood but now you want them to keep their native accents for no other reason than because 'they sound pretty?'

I thought Olivia William's accent was perfect. I was very surprised when I found out
she is British. I lived in Atlanta for several years and while watching the movie I kept thinking how she sounded exactly like my sister-in law.

reply

Like a seasoned DEA agent named John Warton having a thick Austrian accent? How implausible would that be?

But yeah totally - a Brit being in American law enforcement would really blow a hole in this otherwise air-tight story.

reply

Lol, so true. Forget about the main guy, lifelong US agent who talks like he`s gotten his first English lesson last Tuesday...

reply

The difference is is that Schwarzenegger could NOT change his thick Austrian accent while a fellow professional but more capable actor like Olivia Williams COULD have and SHOULD have changed her accent to play an American.

You tried to sound like the voice of reason earlier on in your post but kinda came off a bit douchey towards the end. Particularly the part about "Brits and Aussies flooding Hollywood".

With so much power, a billion dollar film industry like Hollywood can make these Brits and Aussies nameless and irrelevant in a flash if they wished.

If you take a gander at past Hollywood you'll find that Europeans have been in and out of Hollywood for many, many years.

I guess you'd take Channing Tatum and Seth Rogen over Simon Pegg and Nick Frost? Or Mark Wahlberg over Gary Oldman? Or Steven Siegel over Hugh Jackman?

And yes for a matter of fact I do find ropey accents annoying in films just like OP. Watch Ray Winstone's standard American accent/dialect in The Departed or Keanu Reeves's English accent in Dracula and then maybe you might find a basis for this argument.

"im beautiful your not" - me
"you're* " - you

Why not take ALL of them?

Every single foreigner you've mentioned is immensely talented and I would have hated it, as a huge cinephile, to miss out of their work.

But I'm also an American and I can't stand that so many of these foreigners are flooding Hollywood like this due to cheap and ignorant American casting directors and suits.

It is especially unnerves me when American viewers want these invaders to have American roles accommodated for them.

Maybe you should share this with some of the most highly paid actors in Hollywood, most of which happen to be American.

I'm sure I've read somewhere that EU/Aussie actors take less and yet give the same as any other American actor. I don't see how that's an issue with foreign actors stepping in, when so many of them are equally talented.

I understand your annoyance, of course you want more fellow American actors playing the American counterparts. I'm English and it annoys me too, especially dodgy accents. Sometimes I'm all "Why the hell couldn't they get an American actor to play this role?".

It's not as if there aren't enough struggling unknown actors out there already.

Don't worry. A backlash among SAG/AFTRA members has been stirring lately. Expect the union to do something about it soon. I just hope it's effective.

I would love for the union to disallow (non-Canadian) foreigners from joining the union for three years and then allow them in for two years back to another three of exclusion, so on and so forth.

Take less what? Give the same what?

American actors are being displaced and poor acting school graduates aren't getting roles they need fast enough.

I was under the impression EU/Aussie actors were paid less than American ones.

I meant or presumed (under the circumstances they settle for less cash) they still give a good on-screen performance.

Could be just BS, I was certain I read it somewhere but after a brief Google search, nothing seems to suggest such thing.

Yeah. They are willing to work for less because the smallest American paycheck is the largest foreign paycheck for a TV episode or movie. (This is especially true of Aussie actors).

I feel like she either should have kept her original accent OR just spoken in a normal flat sounding US accent. Instead she kept popping out these weird Holly Hunter like lines that sounded Texan or something. She was all over the place and it wasn't trivial it was distracting. I loved her character and think she's beautiful - just didn't care for that atrocious accent.

reply

Yep, there was no consistency in the accent. She would drawl a few words and not others. Terrible script continuity.

reply

IT wouldn't have taken away from the part if she kept a British accent.

It IS true that Arnold always keeps his accent no matter where his character is supposed to be from. I actually don't recall him ever playing an Austrian character. HIs accent hasn't really changed since True Lies or the Terminator despite him living in America for longer than I've been alive.

reply

Arnold simply can't change his accent, Olivia can.
She's a hottie, wished she showed more in the swimming pool scene.

reply

I agree that she should have kept a consistent, non-specific American accent. At one point early in the film, possibly when she's investigating the train hitting the RV, she sounded somewhat British, then at various points she had almost no accent at all, then the southern accent. It was distracting.

What I never understand in situations like this is why they never just hire an American actress. They want the character to be American, Hollywood is flooded with tons of capable American actresses who could have done the job - why did they feel the need to cast Olivia Williams in the first place ? She is ok, but the film would have been just fine with somebody else in her role. As for the accent, it seemed ok to me, but I'm not American, so....

...and a pair of titties that make you wanna stand up and beg for buttermilk

reply

I thought I could hear something weird about her accent, but that might just be because I knew that Olivia Williams isn't American. Anyway, you can't really get all caught up in accents in a movie starring Aahnold, now can you?

This is my signature. There are many like it, but this one is mine.
