Joe Pesci / Tommy DeVito

So we get to see Joe Pesci's early, pre-Hollywood life in this movie through the character Joey. Now what's interesting is that his friend, one of the Four Seasons singers, is named Tommy DeVito... which is also the name of his character in Goodfellas! I'm nonplussed by this coincidence, is it even one?

Its not a coincidence-the character from Goodfellas was named for Tommy DeVito because he had been friends with Joe Pesci

reply

On Wikipedia they say it's a coincidence. I don't know if Pesci was in any way involved with the script.

Did you catch the "funny how?" line in the film? Nice touch.

For the record, Pesci's character in Goodfellas was based on the gangster Tommy DeSimone. Whether or not they changed the name to Tommy DeVito as an homage to an old friend is unknown. It literally could have been decided on the set because they only really call him "Tommy D" in the film. Coincidence? Probably but not necessarily.

"Funny how?" Yeah, that was a good catch. Pretty subtle.

There is a scene in "Goodfellas" when Lorraine Bracco's character says to Ray Liotta's character, "who the Hell do you think you are, Frankie Valli or some kinda bigshot?"

Right from the IMDb trivia page:

At one point, Joey says, "Funny how?" Joe Pesci, on whom Joey is based, played a character in Goodfellas (1990) who says the same thing. That character was based on a real gangster named Tommy DeSimone. For legal reasons, all the characters' last names were changed, except for Henry Hill himself. Pesci's character was credited as Tommy DeVito (a member of The Four Seasons), not Tommy DeSimone.
