Bobby was a Genius!!

Bobby Gaudio is an underrated songwriter. Valli was the star but Bobby was the brains...did not know until I saw the movie.

Does he still write songs?

reply

Don't mean to ruin your view of Gaudio, but he was far from the genius the movie/musical makes him out to be. They are counting on most people to not know the full story or chronology of the group, and have used Eastwood to erase or downplay the importance of key people who played the biggest roles in the group's history. The truth is that Gaudio is solely responsible for less than five of the group's hits, while the rest he co-wrote with Bob Crewe (who produced everything that got them famous), and later Judy Parker. Gaudio was also dependent on Sandy Linzer and Denny Randell, who aren't even mentioned and wrote songs like "Let's Hang On," "Working My Way Back To You," and "Opus 17." The sad fact is that to this day, Gaudio is wrongly assumed or believed to have written the entire Season's catalog himself. And neither the musical or movie do anything to correct that injustice...quite the opposite..they work to feed it even more. The fact is that Gaudio's only claim to fame was writing/co-writing the group's first three hit songs, and for the rest of the Seasons existence, his projects failed (Genuine Imitation Life Gazette, Sinatra's Watertown, Chameleon) anytime he attempted something on his own and didn't have Bob Crewe or Charlie Calello holding his hand.

reply

if this is true you have shattered my esteem for Bob Gaudio - where does your information come from???

reply

All you have to do is read the songwriting credits to everything. It's true that Gaudio is associated with most of their Top 40 hits, but most of those songs were co-written with Crewe. Somewhere around 1968, egos had taken over in the studio, and Gaudio decided he no longer needed Crewe, which resulted in a six year dry spell of no hits and poorly-received albums. They worked together sporadically after that, but ever since then, he and Valli have often downplayed the importance of Crewe's role in the sound and success of the group. Not to mention, they've never once publically acknowledged the roles of Charlie Calello and Nick Massi as arrangers. Massi was the one who arranged the group's harmonies on those early hits. Instead, far too much has been made of Gaudio, and because of very little to no public aknowledgement of other writers and producers, most key players in the story have been largely ignored and designed to seem like Gaudio was the only brain behind the Seasons. Another thing to note, is that unlike bands like The Beatles and The Stones where the roles of each member are universally known and understood, the Seasons were never a universally documented act, so most of the public has no idea of the names of the members let alone song credits. This has worked well in Gaudio's favor.

You just dropped some serious knowledge. I grew up listening to The Four Seasons even though they were already considered an oldies act by that time. I have to admit I know much more about The Beatles, Stones, etc. than the Four Seasons.

It sucks that Nick Massi doesn't get enough credit. He passed away in 2000. Does anyone know the cause of death?

I was not surprised the song "Grease" was not in the play or the movie because neither Gaudio nor Crewe had anything to do with it.

"The Genuine Imitation Life Gazette" album was a colossal bomb and not mentioned in the movie. I think it was perceived as a Beatles ripoff.

The Four Seasons recording for the Motown label was not mentioned either. They released their "Chameleon" album on Motown subsidiary label MoWest Records in 1971. They recorded eight songs for a 1974 album that was never released. Valli had to pay Motown $4,000 to get back the recording for "My Eyes Adored You". He took the tape to Private Stock Records and it became a big hit for Valli as a solo act.

Didn't one of the replacement Four Seasons marry one of Frankie Valli's daughters?

They recorded a lot more than that. Some of those songs were released a year later when Motown put out the Valli solo album Inside You. It's ironic how they rejected "My Eyes Adored You" in 1973, and when it became a huge hit for Private Stock, Motown then tried to capitalize on Valli's comeback by releasing the songs kept in the vault a year before. Not only that, but after completely ignoring the Chameleon album in 1972, and not promoting the single "The Night," they re-released the song as a single in the UK where it became a big hit in 1975.

Gerry (Oh What a Night) Polci married Antonia. They've long since split up.

You really know your stuff. You must be a big Four Seasons fan. What other acts do you like? I am on some music related imdb boards like "The Temptations" miniseries and "The Jacksons: An American Dream".

I think that the film makes it clear enough that Crewe was playing an important role with the lyrics (and the production)β€”he comes up with the "Big Girls Don't Cry" line, for instance. Moreover, during the end credits (I know that most people don't sit through the end credits of films, but I always do), all the songs are credited and lyrics are attributed to Crewe constantly.

reply

Re:the end credits: Yeah, like you I also sit through them and enjoy doing so. I already knew of the two Bobs being involved, as a big Four Seasons fan. However, see my post on another thing involved about labels.

Edited:If you think no mention of Bob Crewe or Bob Gaudio (who WERE mentioned, as cited here, as the one I responded to points out correctly) if that had happenewd as songwriters, was bad how's..

I concur about Massi not receiving enough credit. In particular, his bass vocals provided the perfect counterpoint to Valli's falsetto, creating both balance and irony. After Massi left, the sound was never quite the same, was it?

It cracked me up when Nick said, "If there are four guys, and you're Ringo ... better I should spend some time with my kids." Was that the exact quote? I cringed a little because I love The Beatles including Ringo. I would have no trouble being the "Ringo" in a huge band.

reply

Unless you've ever been in a position like he was in you can't really say how you'd feel. Yeah, I'm sure many people would be happy with the money involved in being a part a famous group/band but eventually your ego comes in and you want the non-monetary advantages of being in said group. Guys like Nick are easily forgotten when you are standing behind a guy like Valli who had all this charisma and talent.

reply

Grease is my favorite Valli song. Pretty sure Barry Gibb wrote it.

reply

The song "Grease" was written by Barry Gibb of the Bee Gees and performed by Frankie Valli. It became a number one single in the United States. The Bee Gees would later perform the song in concert and included it on their "One Night Only" live album.

reply

But the film does not shunt Crewe aside; he almost becomes the fifth Season, much like Brian Epstein was the fifth Beatle.

still not convinced - for example on Can't Take My Eyes ... credits are Words and Music by Bob Crewe and Bob Gaudio - Usually this means Crewe wrote the lyrics and Gaudio the music - There relationship may have been like Lennon and McCartney - has it ever been revealed who wrote the music and who wrote the words??????

reply

What is not being said is that Gaudio is a lyricist. He wrote the words but not all of the tunes. He was and is a songwriter and producer.

went to see the Jersey Boys last night and the program stated - music Bob Gaudio; lyrics Bob Crewe - (sadly Bob Crewe has passed away - just learned that last night as well)

The vitriolic tone of posts by 'untitled_09'made this longtime IMDB member suspicious his posts here were intended to denigrate Bob Gaudio and his impressive musical ouvre.

What I saw upon clicking 'untitled_09's profile rather tends to confirm this poster is pursuing a personal grudge, not sharing factual information.

When I looked up Bob Gaudio on Wikipedia I was amazed at the man's range of accomplishments and productivity. A very busy, talented man! πŸ™Œ
