Well, it sounded revolutionary for Frankie Valli, how about that?
To me, it sounds like a Burt Bacharach song. Which is not a bad thing.

I know just what you mean. The scene didn't make sense to me. Can't Take My Eyes Off of You was a smooth pop song, a nightclub song, really an easy listening song, just the kind of song a middle aged record executive would like. It wasn't by any means a challenging art song. From 1967 that would be something like the Beatles' Strawberry Fields Forever, Judy Collins' Albatross, Phil Ochs' Crucifixion, Buffy Sainte Marie's Fire and Fleet and Candlelight or even songs like Donovan's Legend of a Girl Child Linda or Simon & Garfunkel's The Dangling Conversation (both from 1966).

It didn't sound like anything anyone would say about the song.
