It was a Slavic accent and he looked Slavic too. Slavic is someone from Russia, Ukraine, Baltic Countries, etc.

It sounded Israeli to me. I think they alluded to him having a Jewish background as well

Haha - I currently live in Israel. Not even close. His accent was clearly Slavic.

I doubt an Israeli would have been a prime candidate to successfully infiltrate a mosque and potential Islamic terrorist cell.

Based on his name and the name of the mosque I am guessing they were going for Turkic or Syrian. Possibly Lebanese.

I am thinking Russian Muslim. The last name's -in ending is very Eastern European sounding. Particularly Russia and Ukraine.
