What did you think of ending?

I didn't know this was a remake until I came on this board so maybe it's the same as the original but I didn't like it!

You mean to tell me she let her friend search for a guy that she had trapped in her house for 13 years?

And then when he found out, he wasn't even upset, he starts to dig her a burial hole for him.

On top of that, why wouldn't she say anything when he came back??? Not only did they waste their time and get hurt chasing after a dude, but another cop got killed and she never said let's call this off.

I would have been pissed

And then what was with Ray and Nicole's character? (Claire?)

They are drooling over each other for that long and yet their relationship goes nowhere.

And how did the title tie into it? I thought they were going to mention something about the look in the killers eyes but never did (unless I missed it?)

I didn't know it was a remake, either; I look forward to seeing the original since it's held in such high esteem.

She had no idea that Ray had continued to search for Marzin through the years, she was quite surprised when he told her that he had been looking at roughly a thousand images each and every night. She had no reason to believe he was pursuing the case because he had moved away to work in security for the New York Mets. She was unaware that he was especially invested in the case because he was supposed to meet her daughter that very morning at the bakery but didn't go; his sense of guilt must have been unfathomable.

And then when he found out, he wasn't even upset, he starts to dig her a burial hole for him.
That may not have been my response, but back at the time, he had offered to actually kill Marzin, back in the elevator scene, so it was clear he was willing to work outside of the law to seek justice for his partner and her daughter. At sure at some level he was upset at all the man-hours he'd spent on the case, but understood why Jess didn't volunteer that she was keeping Marzin in a cell at her new home.

On top of that, why wouldn't she say anything when he came back??? Not only did they waste their time and get hurt chasing after a dude, but another cop got killed and she never said let's call this off.
The first thing she told Ray was that she didn't want to pursue this. I guess she figured since it was obviously not Marzin (since she had the real Marzin), she thought it would fizzle out, so she didn't need to let them know she had imprisoned him. She didn't anticipate that Siefert would be killed during the pursuit of the false Marzin. Of course, the story tellers did a great job of making us not miss Siefert by showing his part in protecting Marzin from prosecution, and his heartless comment about not caring about Marzin's "dating habits" in reference to the rape and cold-blooded killing of the daughter of a co-worker.

Regarding Claire and Ray, she may have pined for Ray over the years, so much so that her husband was clearly aware, but sometimes these things just don't work out. She was politically ambitious with a Harvard background, and he was pissing off The Powers That Be in pursuit of Marzin, with a humble background. They just never pursued the relationship.

Overall, I thought it was a decent mystery, with a couple of twists I didn't see coming.

I support, defend and always employ the Oxford comma.

Solid comment.

I just really felt that Nicole Kidman's character Claire was just pointless to the movie. She really served no purpose what so ever to the plot

I thought that for a moment, but remember: he blamed himself for the girl's murder. Thirteen years of looking for her killer would be an okay penance if he thought it was his fault she was dead to begin with.

First, she was surprised that he was still looking for Marzin.

Then she tells him several times to let things go and he doesn't.

Second, what happens in the end is that they both realize they are trapped in the same cycle and they need to (pardon the Frozen reference) let it go.

He tells her that she has a life sentence as much as Marzin and why he basically tells her to just kill him. He is in the exact same position as her, he may not have held him in the basement but he spent every single night going over almost 2000 images of people trying to find him.

Killing him is the only way to set both of them free from their mental imprisonment.

Third, the cop who got killed was someone they both hated. Heck, Ray even tells Jess that he deserved to pay for his part in what happened since he was the guy who set Marzin free.

However, you'll also note that once he got killed in the garage, that Jess confesses to 'killing' Marzin to get Ray to stop digging.

i liked it all. the whole thing worked for me

The lack of denouement hurt the ending for me.

Kidman knew their secret, and if she was professional and integrity, and followed due process, she'd have had them both sent to jail (one for kidnapping and murder, the other for being an accessory to murder or conspiracy to murder since he provided the murder weapon and dug the grave). She is that type of person. But did she?

How about Beckwith? Why does he look like Marzin? Did Marzin have a twin brother, or is it just a guy who uncannily looked like Marzin?

We were never even presented a case that Marzin was the killer. All we had was circumstantial evidence.

reply

What secret did Kidman know?

Roberts said SHE had killed marzin 13 years ago a few months after Ray had left.

So how would Kidman have known that Ray provided the gun or that he dug the grave.

That's the point though - in not following up on Jess's confession, and in the fact that she would have gone with Ray if he'd asked (and then pined for him for 13 years), it is revealed that Claire is not so much "that kind of person" after all. They set her and Jess up as opposites (in many ways) then show that underneath they maybe weren't so different after all.

reply

I think the title ties into the end when Jess and Ray look at each other. They are the only two people who hold the secret of what REALLY happened to Marzin. This, the secret in their eyes.

reply

The revelation near the end was a twist that was quite dark and disturbing.
Then Ray's actions in response were unexpected at first.
But why kill him and then go ahead and actually bury him in the yard?

Dispose of him somewhere else so that if Claire decides to bring Jess to account the confession of the yard burial wouldn't be true.
