The original was overrated, chock full of cliches. I can recommend several much better foreign thrillers:
1. The Hidden Face (do not watch trailer b/c it reveals the shocking twist)
2. Sleep Tight
3. Tell No One
4. With A Friend Like Harry
5. Head-On
All of these are much better and less predictable; especially "The Hidden Face" which contains probably the most-surprising twist I've ever seen.

It's kind of in a category/genre all by itself, but it might best be grouped as a romance wrapped around a police drama with comedy elements.
It's the same when ppl say "the book is sooo much better than the movie/tv show".
They saw/read X so everything else is subpar compared to it. It's impossible for them to appreciate X at the same time as Y.
