Disappointing

I understand that some movies intentionally leave you with a depressing impression that life can be futile, but half way through the movie the story made its point and then kept repeating it for another 45 minutes with nothing to add. The acting was very good and they gave a convincing, albeit one dimensional, portrayal of a grimy industrial town in bleak winter. But these characters didn’t develop. They were introduced as victims and remained as victims with none of them picking up a clue as to how to change that. I left the theater not caring about what would happened to any of them. Waste of time.

The film was intended for "internal consumption" and follows a long tradition of "cultural criticism." Being of Czech descent with still plenty of contact with relatives over in the C.R., I can definitely understand the tone and purpose of the film. Yes, across most of the post-Communist world individual morality is often appalling. But it's not going to get any better unless the society starts seriously talking about it. That appears to me to be the purpose of the film and the Czech art/film community applauded it as the film won 4 Czech Lions (their equivalent of the Oscars) including best film, best director, and best lead actor.
