Actually a good movie.

Hello All,

I don't normally post here, but out of the high level of criticism and low appreciation, thought id lay down my 2 cents. Think more people should give it a chance, it was not even close to being amazing, however i found it to be quite good. All roles were well played and the story, even though all over the place, was very entertaining and did give closure of sorts to the story line. Think people should give it a chance, its better than advertised. I felt while flawed, there was a very tarantinoish air to it, it was as flawed as needed.

Cheers!

I actually liked it myself. And what was interesting was after reading a few comments on here (before I saw this), And looking at thetrailer, I thought I was not going to like it, but it was so much better than I thought. I would recommend it to people, but I fear people would not believe me.

reply

it was actually good and enjoyable. I love the clown mask scene lol

I rented it for Norman Reedus and even though his part was tiny, I ended up liking this movie. It was decently funny and I loved seeing all of those familiar faces popping up all over the place. Elijah Wood's character was a creeper but I loved him just the same. The last scene with Faux Elvis' girlfriend was the best. I thought each story could have been a little tighter but besides that, not a bad way to spend a Friday evening.

I've got two good posts in me and I just wrote my third...

This movie is so strange and at times can be hard to follow...but I really liked it. Of course I do like strange movies LOL

That scene with Matt Dillon and Elijah Wood is on right now...I'm cringing...fish hooks..a hammer OUCH

reply

Just finished watching it and I liked it but it sure is a strange film, very strange actually. I have to wonder how the writer came up with this stuff, especially the fish hook episode. Certainly strange even it was unique.

The worst part is this guy (the writer) is walking amongst us, you may even pass by him at the post office. Hopefully, before he goes postal and gets out the fish hooks.

I think I've seen enough weird movies of late and I'm going to go watch something normal like "Dead in Tombstone" so I don't have nightmares from the Pawnshop.

It's actually a pretty good movie.

There are three things that make up a good movie.
Good cinematography, good acting, good plot.
This one has all three. :)

what about the giant plot hole ala Elijah Wood alive?

the movie was good and entertaining up until that point. How the *beep* did he live, with just a few broken teeth and some fish hook holes? He was basically unharmed, even though Matt Dillon flailed him

that is why this movie came up short

reply

Listen to the director's DVD commentary: the entire town is purgatory and most of the people who live there have sold their souls. They are trapped in the town indefinitely, which is why not only Elijah Wood's character can't be killed because the devil owns his soul, but also why the 'zombie' girls return to Elijah Wood in the end.

reply

in other words, read the effin manual?

no thanks, if the director cannot explain that within the movie, it's bad writing.

A curt little nod by Elijah Wood to the Devil at the end, as he was walking back to the van, was all that was needed to imply this. I saw no other sign within the movie that would explain this "purgatory"

You're the guy who needs to open his eyes and see all the clues throughout the film. I'm sorry that you want everything spoonfed to you like a cheesy studio dumb comedy. There are tons of sacrilegious and satanic imagery throughout the film. Lou's Fire Pit. Cross Roads Liquor. Randy snorting meth off a baptism book. The cook getting his face shoved into the smoker and the brand reading Holy Smokes. The Man who turns up to give Lukas Haas the shotgun and a choice between good and evil. Paul Walker's character having a drug induced premonition of himself burning up and later the meth lab blows up in Hellfire. Creepy satanic masked faces in the fair audience watching the show. The zombie girls who appear to be caged souls who have to compete for Elijah Wood's attention. Lots more if you look closer...

reply

I caught all the imagery, *beep* it was spoonfed. The Man being the most obvious.

Doesn't change bad writing. If he can resurrect, why was he still missing a few teeth? Elvis got a brand new cape and hair. The zombie girls are completely irrelevant to EW's bad character arc. He comes back with missing teeth and fish hook holes, but nothing else. If he was in league with the devil like we are supposed to believe, it was poorly presented.

Get a flvcking sense of humor, a-hole. Go and dissect The Big Lebowksi or Raising Arizona or better yet, just go and make your own film. These films are absurdist, over the top, black comedies. They don't subscribe to the rules of physics and hardcore reality. You are on a complete nitpicking roll and it's pretentious. There is nothing realistic about anything in Pawn Shop Chronicles. The entire film is a goof. You're fixated on this one little story point which has been explained to you a dozen times. Obviously you can't kill Elijah Wood's character. He's still alive for a reason. Do you really think the writer and director weren't aware that dim bulbs like yourself would be whining about the fact that he's still alive in the end - with a smile on his face and ready to abduct fresh meat? This is not a small, overlooked story point. It was done intentionally with a very strategic reason. If you are too clueless to understand why, then you're wasting your time with this film.

reply

Standing ovation!

Some people want spoon-fed even when the think they don't.

"Light Up, Light up, as if you had a choice"

reply

strongly agree. people who disliked THIS film would only LIKE memento or a tarantino film because the critics told them it was good. think for yourself, out of the box - this film is destined to be a cult classic. EPIC.

reply

...because "They were all dead from the beginning and it all was purgatory" is such an original concept. ;)

reply

this was campy good fun, like a john waters' film. insane - taking risks like they did with elijah's character is the kind of thing you usually only see on south park (which i don't watch btw). the progression of the elvis story alone, as portrayed by brendan, would have been worth it for me, but there were so many tragic comedy plot lines it's just brilliant. matt damon's careless dismissal of his new wife, for example, and then how that worked out for him.

reply

yeah, this movie surprisingly good, and creepy. not a masterpiece, but still very entertaining!

reply

Agreed. I think this movie has received some unjustified bad reviews. It was a great movie

Is she the one with all that *beep* in her face? No man, thats my wife!

reply

I initially watched it just for the Tom Jane cameo, but I ended up enjoying the whole thing, especially the middle part. Matt Dillon stole the show.
