That Elijah Wood scene

Really caught me out of guard. I mean if I saw a movie like 'Saw' I would be prepared for, but I really did not expect such thing in a movie like this not to say that up to the particular scene, everything feels tame and comical. So yeah a real shocking value.

I understand the movie is categorized black comedy by the least, does the scene suppose to be funny though?
