Symbols aren't everything...

Although I enjoyed some elements of that movie, such as the buildup of the sexual tension between the two protagonists and lovers and the quality of the images (including the love-making scenes), the whole concept is way too far-fetched, and the whole symbolism misses its target. Acting is very poor (especially the radiologist) and the two lovers failed to convince me with their mad desire for each other. As a result, I did not believe in the central idea of the story, and ended up witnessing just two neurotic lost young adults drowning together in the maelstrom of their madness, instead of getting carried away with their passion, their dreams and their unconditional love as a mutual total gift of their two beings. And on the first level, that movie can be rather repulsive if the viewer is not convinced by the story !
