That is what I initially thought but then when I found out there was a demon/devil afoot, I assumed it was their "portal." It could also be that there was all that paranormal craziness going on that the power was surging- but wouldn't the lights in the house be effected by that as well? I know they didn't have a lot of electricity but there was a lamp or two about if I'm remembering correctly.
