Christian? SPOILERS

How can the guy who was eaten by the troll be Christian? Isn't it un-Christian to lie?

It's a paradox. You can't lie about not being a Christian because the moment you lie you're automatically no longer a Christian.

This would have been a very good film if it wasn't for that ridiculous lapse in logic. It would have made more sense if the character lied about being a Christian when he in fact wasn't.

The again, let nothing stand in the way of an artist and their right to bash Christians, right?

reply

I'm an atheist, but I was reared by a very religious mother. While lying is considered a sin, there is no Christian teaching, to my knowledge, that suggests one automatically forfeits his/her Christianity by lying.

Originality needs a reboot.

......dafawk?!? lmfao

reply

Christians can lie without losing their Christian card. Its a sin that you have to repent for like any other.

reply

The guy THOUGHT he was a christian. It was a troll he was dealing with, not God!

In Cod we trust.

reply

By your logic Harvey, it's impossible for Christians to exist :D

reply

About your last paragraph:
You're misunderstanding the reason why the trolls smell and want to eat Christians. It doesn't have anything to do with the director trying to bash Christians; the trolls ability to smell Christians is part of the Norwegian folklore, as Norway during the Middle Ages (which was where the fairy tales originate) was a Christian country. When a character was being chased by a troll, the troll's standard phrase was: "I can smell Christian man's blood!" Back in the days, it basically meant the same as "I can smell a human!"

reply

Thank you for explaining that...somewhat. I was confused as hell as to why the trolls preferred or came after Christians.

Stick it to them before they stick it to you!

Where on earth did you get your ideas about what it is to be a Christian? People say the weirdest things in these posts. Listen up: you are even *supposed* to lie for the protection of the church. Christians lying is neither unusual nor unChristian. Seriously, who taught you about Christianity???

reply

Wait. You're never supposed to lie. What makes you say that?! You're supposed to go out with swords preach the gospel and not be ashamed. Thou shalt not lie.

reply

He never answered the question when Hand asked if any of them believed in God. However I'm calling bs because a true Christian wouldn't be afraid as "fear is not of God"

reply

Wow are you guys overthinking it. First of all, Christianity is very much tied into "Troll" folklore. Folklore also dictates that Trolls live under bridges; hence the scene in which the Troll's mutilated sheep was found under a bridge is of no more significance than the camera-man's religion. Perhaps Hans was being sarcastic or even ignorant all along; but we will never know because the Trolls may have been alerted to the humans' presence by the camera-man's religious beliefs or because he simply started to panic and sweat. Kudos to the filmmakers--look at the debate they've stirred. Amazing film.

reply

This scene is a pun; many (perhaps the majority) of Norwegians regard their religiousness a private matter which is not to be discussed openly. That's why the cameraman didn't "admit" he was a christian.

For the heart life is simple. It beats as long as it can.

reply

That is not why he did not say he was a Christian. He was ashamed as nobody else was a Christian. He was embarrassed to admit he was a Christian so he did not say anything. That is common in society today. And you could tell that was what was happening by how he reacted. The director did a very good job of showing this.

reply

Exactly. It is a private thing many (perhaps most) Norwegians find embarrassing to talk about in public. His embarrassment makes him stubbornly deny every suggestion made about him on the topic.

Had the students seen trolls by that point in the movie? I can't recall. But they were very skeptical until they'd seen them in person. I was thinking that when Hans asked "are any of you Christian", I thought they still thought Hans was half mental and didn't really take the question seriously.

No, I believe not (it has been a while..).

"I thought they still thought Hans was half mental and didn't really take the question seriously."
Surely. IIRC there was a series of bear kills (which is illegal) in the area and this guy Hans looked rather suspicious, so they decided to spy on him to have a scoop (fun fact: many of Norway's best journalists are educated in this particular college).

It might started as a joke, but it very soon became (hilariously) serious, so the Christian guy had a lot of opportunities to come forward.

I always lie... in fact, I'm lying now.
