Well, documentaries almost never do any real business at the box office and I would imagine one about a 90-year-old musical theatre star is not generally the type of documentary that the limited "documentary" audience likes (mostly exposes, tragic tales, etc.) Very few documentaries of any kind get any general theatrical release although I am somewhat surpised this one apparently did not play in LA or New York nevertheless it got quite a bit of publicity, did make the film festival circuit, and now has been released on dvd and airing on the premium movie channels which in all is quite good for a film like this, I can think of many other celebrity documentaries that seem to have barely been screened at all.
