It's most similar to The Fire Within... especially as they're based off the same book.
shareYes, it reminded me on Boy A, but still, there is, of course, a little difference. Anders didnt do any crime, but Boy A had a criminal file. Therefore, the motives are quite different.
Both of them failed at the end to forget the past and to move on. It is a bit disappointing to see them both dead.
Still:
Oslo, 31. august - 7/10
Boy A - 8,5/10
But one huge difference, in Boy A boy is trying to start his life again but the society is against him and here the boy is the one that can't find his way back in "normal" world.
I was reminded of Goodbye Solo
Are you sure you're not thinking of "Oh Boy" ? http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1954701/ - seems to be WAY more fitting a comparison than "Boy A"
Frances Ha is in the same vein, albeit hipster.

It also slightly reminded me of Before Sunrise by Richard Linklater. The very ending was almost identical (the shots of the places he had visited earlier).
shareThat's right! Very good observation. I haven't seen Before Sunrise in years so I didn't pick up on that, but now I remember it. I'm definitely now thinking Trier was inspired by that ending.

Actually I take it back. Antonioni's L'eclisse predates both films in such an ending.
