not only a bad movie, but it manages somehow offends everyone's intelligence. any one who has any knowledge of canada, hockey or south asians, will find it insulting. russell peters has never been so unfunny but actually (bless his heart) looks embarrassed to be there. i hope he was paid well. watch bend it like beckham or ocean of pearls instead.

I'm watching it on TV as we speak (about 60 minutes through)

Russell Peters is hilarious at stand up but it's not translating to acting from what i see. I'm not one to decide what should offend other cultures but I can see how Shieks get heavily offended by this. Quite a few negative sterotypes portrayed for cheap laughs. Brutal stereotypes portrayed
-all indians have the last name singh; Seriously none of the players on the team are related and yet they all have the same last name.
-over emphasis of turbans. Players wont take off turbans to play (including the goalie who wears the old Jason style mask that has been illegal since the 1980s)
-racial segregation; people in this fil only hang out with their own race, the indians only hang with each other, nobody else associates with them, every time a white person and an indian converse (other than the female love interest and Rob Lowe) they immediately dislike each other
-indian father acts like a dictator and has unrealistic expectations

the stereotypes are bad enough but it expects the viewer to believe these stereotypes are normal but ignore one obvious stereotype: Indians hate hockey and would rather play soccer or cricket.

To address the "Singh" issue: that has to do with the fact that everyone on that hockey team is Sikh - and in the Sikh religion, all baptized males have Singh as a last name (Kaur for females I believe).

Um. I disliked the movie too (mainly for being completely predictable and cheesy), but to clarify this movie was not about all Indians.

This movie was about Sikhs. As in the followers of the religion Sikhism (which I must clarify is completely unrelated to Islam or Hinduism). They're a religious minority in India, mainly from the Punjab region.

All baptized male Sikhs do all have Singh ("lion") as their last name (or as part of their name in some way, it's also commonly used as a middle name). Kaur ("princess") for women. They are also supposed to never shave or cut their hair, and they must cover their hair with a turban.

These aren't stereotypes. These are the actual religious beliefs of Sikhs. In contrast, the majority of Indians (who are either Hindu or Buddhist) can shave or cut their hair and wear whatever they want on their heads.

Oblivion covered the sikh stuff (but lol at the "Shiek" spelling, it's like you mixed them up with arabs).

As for Russell Peters ... he was playing an ahole, and he did a good job of being unlikeable, that was the point of his character - he even confessed to being a self-centered jerk on the day of his wedding. The only time it didn't work was when he tried to incorporate some of his stand-up, like assuming the guard at the jail was desi when he was latino.

On the racial segregation, the reason the minor white characters didn't get along with them was because they were the opposing team. Standard sports movie trope, the only reason it looked racial is because in this movie the teams were different races.

Indian father as dictator, yeah, that's a stereotype. Same as in Bend it like Beckham though.

Hockey vs cricket ... that was addressed in one of the father-son fights. Besides, if they were all playing cricket it the central theme of indians proving they belong in canada just as much as anyone else would not have worked.

The movie was cheesy, but the racial stuff was not a major problem, the problem was predictability (and some really clunky dialogue).

These are some of the most pathetically ignorant comments I have ever read. The movie was cheesy and fun. As it was intended like all Bollywood style movies.
