Borgia Deleted Scenes

Given that the show in its life of 3 seasons and 38 episodes spanned several storylines and myriads of characters, it's reasonable that a few scenes or minor characters ended up on the cutting room floor. We know from the available behind-the-scenes and promotional footage of the existence of several such alternate/all-new/extended scenes that didn't make it into the final cut of the series, so let's try to gather them here:

Season 1

-The Season 1 trailer offers a slightly extended look at the first consistory scene of the show, with a weakened Pope Innocent VIII (Udo Kier) entering slowly and reaching his throne with the help of Burchard.

-This site: http://www.hanzljiri.cz/galleries/borgia/ gives us a glimpse at an extended coronation sequence, during which Rodrigo has his masculinity examined and subsequently faints.

-The Season 1 making-of has several snippets of Adriana de Mila, such as a conversation with Giulia outside the papal appartments, before Adriana is denied entrance by armed guards.

-Alternate angles of Rodrigo glaring at Della Rovere during the welcoming of Djem in Episode 2 (Season 1 trailer), Rodrigo talking with Giulia in the Castel St. Angelo's papal appartments in Episode 9 (Season 1 making-of), Cesare greeting Rodrigo and Giulia in Orvieto in Episode 10 (Season 1 making-of), Rodrigo drinking wine during the first scene of Episode 11 (Season 1 making-of), extended scene from Episode 6 with Rodrigo and Adriana in the Sistine Chapel in front of the crucifix (Season 1 making-of) and more.

Season 2

-A scene with Lucrezia killing a piglet (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qPS2SVsNoUs at the 53'' point and several promotional pics).

-Scene(s) with a character named Bobbo (played by David Fellowes: http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1527606/?ref_=fn_al_nm_1), who could be the forger collaborating with the Borgias, mentioned in Season 1, Episode 1.

-Scene(s) with Ellie Darcey-Alden as Felice Della Rovere (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm3385554/?ref_=fn_al_nm_2).

-Possible flashback sequence involving Vanozza, given that the actress Assumpta Serna is wearing a vibrant blue dress unlike the ones her character's usually in, her hair are partially down and she's holding a blonde child (young Lucrezia?) (https://vimeo.com/59653372 at the 2:27 point).

Season 3

-Scenes involving Guido Gallio, a leader of Fano (played by John Standing: http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0822062/?ref_=fn_al_nm_1), Barbara Torelli (played by Rebecca Saire: http://www.lyndaronan.com/rebecca-saire/) and Burchard's wife (couldn't find the actress).

-A night scene in the Palazzo Farnese, with Giulia and Giovanna Farnese (https://twitter.com/StegerBabsie/media).

-A scene from the series finale depicting Martin Luther being ordained a priest: https://vimeo.com/92607430

Oh thank you dmyriounis, that's such a good idea!

So this Bobbo character is the man who forged Cesare's birth certificate in Season 1, right? And one of the plotlines in S2E06, where Bobbo should have appeared, develops around the certificate, too, so it makes completely sense. Then I would cautiously assume that Bobbo was likely killed in the episode. :)

And I fully agree with your guess that the scene with Vannozza and the blond girl is most probably a flashback and the girl is the young Lucrezia( flashbacks are Fontana's trademarks anyway); it's a shame they deleted it!

Why the hell they decided not to include Martin Luther being ordained to the priesthood is still beyond me. I mean, the final episode doesn’t really feel like a closure in so many respects: the plot doesn't slow down until the very end, the fates of many characters remain unresolved, there is at least a bit of hope for everyone etc… In my opinion, the appearance of Luther would fit into this picture of never-ending development very well, featuring the Church as something alive and capable of a new start and reformation, too.

The name of the lady who played Frau Burchard is Lauren Tucker and for what I know she is actually not an actress but an assistant to producer.

Season 1

Unfortunately I have nothing to add here. I didn’t know about the series at the time they were filming S1 so even if crew members posted any pictures/ infos that might be related to deleted scenes now it’s basically impossible to find them anymore.

The only thing: I remember that some time ago I saw a video( trailer or resume from S1 I suppose) with a quick shot of the Venetian cardinal Gherardo( James Greene) lying dead (or maybe dying?) in his carriage. But sadly I can’t find the vid anymore. Neither have I any idea if Gherardo died peacefully or not quite.

Season 2

- Riario Sansoni, Sforza, della Rovere and other cardinals before the Sleeping Cupid made by Michelangelo:
http://spettacoliecultura.ilmessaggero.it/televisione/borgia-intrighi-e-complotti-papali-in-scena-il-lato-oscuro-della-chiesa/208872.shtml

The sculpture appears for the first time in Ep.4 during the conversation between Michelangelo and Cesare in Florence and later, in Ep.6, Lucrezia briefly mentions that Riario Sansoni has bought a beautiful antique statue of sleeping cupid recently. So in this scene Riario, probably still believing it’s antique, demonstrates his last purchase to his brother cardinals. (This little funny story about Cupid is true: Michelangelo treated his sculpture with acidic earth to make it look more ancient. Riario, who bought it, finally learned of the forgery but was so impressed by Michelangelo’s talent that forgave him and even invited him to Rome. And I especially like that sceptical look on the face of della Rovere, Michelangelo’s future patron. )

- There are many random pictures from S2 on this French page:
http://series-tv.premiere.fr/Borgia-2423495/Borgia-Saison-2-Galerie-Photos-3686848

In one of them Lucrezia is making her way through the crowd, accompanied by the guards and holding the letter with her name written on it. Another shot shows Lucrezia, Angela Lanzol and di Calabria taking a conversation (probably it’s one of Spoleto’s scenes. Both scenes seem to be deleted from the final cut; anyway I don’t remember them in the series.

- Even though the article on S2 last filming days in Castello Monselice doesn’t mention Ellie Darcey-Alden we can take a look at her in the costume:
http://mattinopadova.gelocal.it/padova/cronaca/2012/11/06/news/anche-scene-di-letto-nel-castello-cini-per-il-film-i-borgia-1.5983906?ref=search

And in the group photos(taken in Monselice as well) one can find both Ellie and Sara Rivero( Lucrezia Normanni) among the other crew members:
https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.568625889889319.1073741855.456244704460772&type=1

For what I know Felice and her mother were supposed to arrive to Milan either before King Louis coronation or right after it ( Ep.11 or 12), and it seems Normanni kissed della Rovere on arrival, in public. Also, there should have been at least one scene between Felice and Cesare.

- Another scene was shot for Ep. 9: after the archery competition in Spoleto a big feast was hold during which Goffredo got so drunk that he fell on the ground. (One of the Italian extras who took part in the shooting of this scene desperately looked for it across the whole season; needless to say he was very disappointed that they cut him out! )

Season 3

- In the picture probably related to one of the first episodes Cesare seems to be comforting Machiavelli who might be beaten( by Vitelli? lol):
http://bilder.filmstarts.de/pictures/14/07/30/12/19/012191.jpg

- On the Italian Sky Atlantic page there are some photos from Ep.9 in which Cesare wears his “mask of death” standing in the crowd - while in the final version there was nothing of the sort. Also, there is another shot with Cesare, Agapito and Goffredo all kneeling( in the coronation of King Louis?); it seems that the shot ended up on the cutting room floor as well:
http://skyatlantic.sky.it/skyatlantic/news/photogallery/2014/11/28/i-borgia-terza-stagione-nono-episodio.html#14

- Sky Atlantic again, this time Ep. 13:
http://skyatlantic.sky.it/skyatlantic/news/photogallery/2014/12/11/i-borgia-terza-stagione-tredicesimo-episodio.html#12
We see Juana La Loca in the prison courtyard(?), accompanied by the guards, and the whole scene seems to take place at night! No idea what’s happening here, seriously…

- In addition, on these two pages there are pretty many S3 photos depicting some short scenes/ moments/ angles of shooting I don’t remember at all( like Gacet facing Alessandro at the wedding of Lucrezia, Gacet in his Ottoman outfit talking to another Turk etc):
http://www.vanityfair.it/show/i-borgia/14/11/03/i-borgia-3-serata-6
http://series-tv.premiere.fr/Borgia-2423495/Borgia-Saison-3-Galerie-Photos-4055419

- Mario Tardon( Francesco Orsini) is credited on imdb for Ep.10( 1503, Part 2) but never actually appeared in the episode:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3213364/fullcredits?ref_=tt_cl_sm#cast

However, the small chat between Mario and Niccolo Besio( Goffredo) suggests that at least one scene with their joint participation was in fact shot:
https://twitter.com/Nick_Besio/status/397463114389544960

So: it seems to be a sort of fight between their characters since the actors are referring to the(slightly modified ) fighting scene from West Side Story. I’d say this deleted scene might show some clashes between the Borgia and the Orsini families during the riots caused by Rodrigo’s death ( since the problems with Orsini are a part of the plot in Ep.10, indeed)

- Finally, the recent showreel of Davide Lipari( Sigismondo d’Este) includes a conversation between his character and Lucrezia, probably from Ep.13:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PTESCS3oqIg ; at the 25'' point.
The scene also reveals a couple of spoilers that were never even mentioned in the final cut! 

Thanks for the valuable additions, eugenia_katze, you inspired me to remember a few more:

-Season 1: I remember in the making-of there's an extension of the scene where Giulia and Vanozza meet just outside the Apostolic Palace, where Vanozza turns towards the camera looking determined and fierce and then leaves.

-Season 2: Α scene of Cardinal Carafa plotting with King Federico d'Aragona over a map, present in the Season 2 making-of.

-Season 3: The "previously on" segments starting each episode offer a few snippets of scenes subsequently deleted, namely Astorre Manfredi in his throne room in Faenza looking menacing and Rodrigo suddenly waking up in his bed searching for Gacet, whom he's just dismissed!

My completist tendencies cause me physical pain when I learn there's so much more stuff of a show I like in some editing room somewhere! Do you think there could be a way to petition for the release of these snippets in a special edition box set? It's definitely a pity given the time and money it cost to film the show not to have every second and every cent spent appear on-screen!

As for your amazing contributions:

-I hadn't thought of Bobbo being killed in Season 2, Episode 6 but now that you guessed it, it makes perfect sense.

-The worst of all with the Vanozza flashback is that they would strive to make the actors look so much younger but it would be tremendously fun to watch a younger, blonder-haired Rodrigo in his cardinal attire again. I wonder what the scene's subject was and where exactly it was placed in the season. Personally, I would like it to have been a part of Rodrigo's rehab, remembering the good days after so much negativity towards Vanozza.

-The Martin Luther connection being deleted pains me as well, but at least they hinted at the movement with the presence of Gianneto, the crucified pilgrim in Season 3, Episode 7. Though, the expressive face of the bishop ordaining Martin Luther, representing the old class of privileged priests would make a fine addition as an image in Season 3.

-The sculpture of Cupid also makes an appearance several times later so the only thing that angers me about the scene's exclusion is that they deprived us of more Charles McKay as Ascanio Sforza, the most undervalued and underused member of the show's vast ensemble.

-I think the scene with Lucrezia in the crowd is her watching Bishop Eroli, governor of Spoleto, suffering and holding the letter summoning her to appear before the Pope to announce her appointment.

-The scenes with Felice and Normanni would have been so interesting, adding one more layer to Della Rovere. Normanni's appearance in Season 3 is so disappointing, she seems just like another prostitute and not the mother of Della Rovere's only daughter, which should have been mentioned!

-The Spoleto feast scene doesn't intrigue me but any chance for more Renaissance pomp should be welcome.

-I think it's definitely Vitelli the one who beats Machiavelli, I seem to remember one scene from the Season 3 making-of with Vitelli attacking Machiavelli and getting restrained by Cesare at the last minute.

-Cesare's skull makeup was magnificent, it's a pity it didn't appear in more scenes.

-I think the scene with Juana la Loca could be just a scene of her leaving or entering the castle, that could just serve the episode's atmosphere and nothing more but I could be wrong.

-I'm so intrigued by the Orsini scene. Francesco was perhaps the most likeable Orsini yet.

the only thing that angers me about the scene's exclusion is that they deprived us of more Charles McKay as Ascanio Sforza, the most undervalued and underused member of the show's vast ensemble.

I liked McKay as Ascanio so much that I couldn't help being disappoined to learn that he wouldn't return for the third series - even if in history there was in fact not that much left for Ascanio to do: he was being hold in the French prison for years and freed only after Pope Alexander's death, in order that he could travel to Rome and vote for George d'Amboise at the next conclave. Btw I thought Peter Sullivan on "The Borgias" was excellent as well; there must be something in all Ascanios I generally like!

-I think the scene with Lucrezia in the crowd is her watching Bishop Eroli, governor of Spoleto, suffering and holding the letter summoning her to appear before the Pope to announce her appointment.

A very good guess: Lucrezia and all the people around her are looking upward, indeed, so that must be the execution of Eroli!

Normanni's appearance in Season 3 is so disappointing, she seems just like another prostitute and not the mother of Della Rovere's only daughter, which should have been mentioned!

I cannot agree more on this; della Rovere and Normanni bed scene looks random and weirdly disconnected from any S3 plot lines. And for what I know, Sara Rivero didn't even participate in S3 shooting, so my guess is that the bed scene was actually shot for S2 and later thrown into the middle of S3 with the only purpose: to show audience that della Rovere is in fact bisexual and thereby to build a sort of base for the future "della Rovere might be Cesare's true father" twist.

-I think it's definitely Vitelli the one who beats Machiavelli, I seem to remember one scene from the Season 3 making-of with Vitelli attacking Machiavelli and getting restrained by Cesare at the last minute.

Yeah and on the show Vitelli said more than once that he considers Machiavelli and the other members of the Signoria personally responsible for the death of his brother Paolo; so he wouldn't hesitate a moment to knock the spirit out of the chancellor of the Florentine Republic, surely.  Or even more probable: Cesare himself could encourage Vitelli to hurt Machiavelli a little bit, just to make Niccolo more agreeable to his terms( the historical Cesare liked to frighten the Signoria with the presence of Vitelli and Orsini cousins, the friends of Medici, among his captains, constantly hinting that only his good will would prevent him from changing the government of Florence at any moment).

Oh you're so right on these "previously on" parts, I have completely forgotten them! Now I remember watching Ep.5 for the first time and being all like "Wait, wtf, there was totally NO Astorre Manfredi in the previous episode!"

- Another clear example of sloppy editing that could be connected with a deleted scene: in Season 3 Ep.11 Cesare, who tries to stop the papal army from leaving Ostia, remembers all the people he ever killed. At the end of the list, right before "the entire population of Capua", some "Fabrizio Giglioli" is placed - however, the character with the name was never even given the barest mention on the series! Since all the victims are listed in strict chronological order  I would suggest that the missing scene in question is probably from Ep.9.

- Also, I believe I found something that might be that night feast at Spoleto I've spoken about: in Valentina D'Agostino's interview for Season 2, at the 1:56 point, there is a short shot of Angela surrounded by the inhabitants of Spoleto while on the right we can see Lucrezia talking to Goffredo. By the way, in the same interview( 2:33 point) Angela is seen beside di Calabria who lies in the bed, which could be another scene left on the cutting room floor:
https://vimeo.com/59733126

All in all I feel I should rewatch all "making of" and BTS videos once again...

Of course I'd love so much to watch all these scenes, even if the cutting of most of them was probably justified, especially in S3 which is already heavily overloaded with characters and events almost until the breaking point. It would be also fun to get to know how right we are with our guesses.( Generally speaking, I'm VERY bad at guessing anything on Fontana's shows; I have predicted so disappointingly little in both seasons 2 and 3 of "Borgia", despite having collected all possible set photos and spoilers .)

And I LIKE the idea of a petition for the deleted scenes; the problem is that I don't even know whom to address it in the first place, with a dozen of different production companies which are obviously not that good at reaching agreement on anything: firstly they couldn't decide for months whether the show would be picked up for a second season, then they were not sure how many seasons they wanted at all etc. Besides, right now it's possibly not the best moment to start such a petition: I'm not sure if the Italian fans of the show, for example, would actively sign it 'cause they are actually still asking for Season 2&3 to be finally released on the discs in Italian. The German and Austrian audiences, on the other hand, are still waiting for the airing of Season 3 in their countries...

Yes, I had noticed that too, my friend! To me it sounded more like "Fabrizio Giglione", though I wouldn't know who that could be. At the time I noticed it first, I thought that could be one of Cesare's famous historical victims that had to be mentioned, but I am yet to find anything on it!

Wow, great find! Love the outdoors night scenes on the show and unfortunately there weren't enough of them!

Yes, I see what you mean. I think that if we wanted to mount such a campaign we should address it first to the people involved in the production that are on Twitter, such as Michael Daniele Driscoll, Metin Huseyin, Takis Candilis etc! But do you happen to know why the show's so long overdue in all those countries? Germany, in particular, seemed to always get it second and then roll out a nice DVD/Blu-Ray boxset!

Perhaps another deleted scene( or maybe it’s just the actors having fun on set?), this time directly from Tom Fontana’s own Instagram: Juana The Mad and Cesare dancing:

reply

Thanks for another gem, eugenia_katze! The dance seems to me rather modern and thus, it's most likely a playful bts moment but given that this is the Mad Queen and (Mad) Cesare I wouldn't rule anything out!
