If you liked Borgia you might also like......

I have a confession to make. Its been 3 weeks since I finished this series, and I can't get it out of my head. Are there any other historical dramas like this out there? As close to history as possible with a tv show, good pacing, interesting characters. Preferably an European production in English. Any period of history.

I wasn't able to make it past the first episode of Showtime's Borgias. Tudors was a little better, but not much. Both are good background noise, but not programs I really enjoy watching.

Personally I would recommend to you the best period drama that has ever been produced: HBO's Rome.

In only 2 seasons it provided us with 22 episodes full of fleshed-out heroes and villains, rapid-pace political intrigue and romance, stunning visuals and unparalleled production standards, perfect dialogue and finally sufficient closure.

I second Rome. Unfortunately, they had to condense 4 seasons into 1 so S2 was not as great as S1. Also, they took more liberties with the historic figures and events than Fontana (I'm still annoyed about Attia and Cleopatra).

John Adams was very good too, they didn't shy away from darker moments of the American Revolution. And of course, Band of Brothers and The Pacific are great WWII dramas based on true events.

I also heard some good things about Isabel (about Queen Isabella I of Spain) and Hispaniya, la leyenda (ancient Spain). No idea if the translation is available.

If you miss Stanley Weber (Juan), he's playing St Germaine in the currently running season 2 of Outlander.

Canal+ (who produced Borgia) is woking on Versailles (Lois XIV times). Apparently BBC2 has purchased rights so it should be available in English soon.

Also try Spartacus, or if you want to move a bit more Scandinavian try Vikings. If you want to try historical fantasy then Game of Thrones will not disappoint. Rome recommend 100%

I loooved the Tudors (so I'm not sure why you didn't like it).
