Good film, especially for the small budget.

Seriously not what I was expecting at all! The acting isn't that bad, the action and cinematography is great and at times really great. Van Damme's role is kinda small but his acting is perfect. Then you have Peter Robocop Weller as one of the most hated bad guys ever doing an amazing job. Why isn't he in more movies!!??? For the budget the film is really good, as an action/fight film it is a heck of a lot of fun, and as a whole it is alright. Probably 6.5/10 (but fight films NEVER score high) Definitely a rental.

The story was shifting around too much, a bit confusing especially at the one hour mark but just watch it and have fun. I liked it better than the goofy expendables for sure. That pizza just had too much cheese for my taste. Out of the last decade of van damme films I've seen this is in the top three. Universal Soldier: Regeneration is really good, in hell has some great moments, JCVD has fantastic acting, and this one is pretty well put together. The others are pretty hard to watch but this one I think didn't have any real noticeable problems. I mean 3million bucks and you get a film like this? It's impressive.

Thanks for your post, standrkm. I am also surprised at the low rating, and wonder if Van Damme's limited screentime has disappointed viewers who were expecting more than 5 minutes in a prison cell and 30 seconds in a prison yard from JCVD. Really did like his moments with Cung Le/Hong, and working through the mental loss and grief. "She is gone. There is nothing you can do about it now. You have to get past it. Can you do it?" Probably every man, woman and child in the world has had a moment where a personal failure was just overwhelming.

Since 'JCVD' a few years back, and his strikingly bold performance in 'Expendables 2', I have been so impressed with Van Damme's improvement as an actor. I wonder if the low scores might be fanboys who didn't get to see him do the splits on the kitchen counter in this movie. Anyway, a very nice old-school action movie, Peter Weller was a real pleasure to watch chewing the scenery and having fun. Cung Le was also great in 'Pandorum' and has some nice sincere moments in this movie, too. I liked it, and hope to see more from him.

I gave it 5 and that's being generous. My low rating has nothing to do with Van Damme's limited screentime. I like Van Damme, but I'm not a huge fan or anything, so I didn't really care that he wasn't in it all that much, but the film is a mess. Nothing makes sense, apart from Weller the acting was awful, and the fights, though brutal looking, weren't all that entertaining except for the first one against the latino drug dealers.

The story was shifting around too much, a bit confusing ...
That's the understatement of the year.

No seriously, you've nailed it. Seek no further. A movie (even a fight movie) has to have some sort of coherent plot if it expects even an ordinary rating, as you observed. All this had was a bunch of fight scenes hanging together with some skeletal plot threads, many of which made little sense.

Thus it's a 4.5 which I think is generous.🐭
