The Man From Snowy River

This movie is almost a scene for scene ripoff of The Man From Snowy River. Boy and Dad live in the mountains but aren't making it and the Dad wants boy to go to the low country. Boy gets bright idea to steal dragon eggs(catch herd of horses) but dad is killed by the dragon (black stallion). Boy goes to work in lowlands for the father of a pretty girl, dragon attacks and he clumsily uses the father's family sword(prize winning horse) to try to kill it but damages sword/horse. Bully stable hands, search for the runaway girl, firewood at dinner, girl in blanket at campfire- even the same "train with the sword/horse" montage.

Its all there practically scene for scene... even down to the same lines -father slaps daughter, "you're just like your mother".

Aside from that, the movie was ok. Acting was amateurish but watchable. Nicola was super-cute ;) -sweeter than the fiery Sigrid Thornton. Music was good but a little over dramatic in places it really didn't need to be. CG was better than sci-fi channel, but lower budget than theatrical movies. Choreography on the sword fights was really slow. Snowy River was way way better, but this may be a fun watch if you're not too critical, if you haven't seen Snowy River or if you have and you want to compare for fun.

I haven't seen The Man From Snowy River, but those sound like pretty generic 'hero's journey' plot points.

No the first post is right on the money. I have seen both movies and "Dawn of the Dragonslayer is a scene for scene rip-off of "Man from Snowy River." The only differences are the time period the movie is set in; he's fighting a horse and not a dragon; and the the boy wrecks a prize sword fighting the evil dragon compared to the boy wrecks a prize horse will fighting the evil horse. To me it's just remarkable that there was not lawsuit filed over this.

Hmm maybe that is why I enjoyed this movie as much as I did. I loved TMFSR. The scenery in this movie was beautiful. Considering the hero just got out of acting school he didn't do too bad for his first movie.
The OP was right on with their observation.
That Sterling actor seemed very familiar especially his voice. I'm an American and doing a quick scan of his films none looked familiar.
